Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What a waste of money - and I was given it as a 'gift'
I've had this CD going on 10 years now and to begin with I hated it. Despite opening my mind wider than a python's jaw, the near-total absense of structure or melody prevented me getting past the first few tracks. Then after a few years I forgot my initial impressions and decided to give it another go. Still the same avantgard plop. This record makes me want to smash up my CD player. Just because he ran his band like a mad dictator and made them stay up for weeks on end rehearsing doesn't alter the fact that this is unlistenable garbage. Sorry, note-perfect, unlistenable garbage.
His lyrics are certainly interesting and poetic, but don't make the mistake of confusing 'uncoventional' with 'cool' or 'good' as far as the music goes.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Too weird
im giving the album three stars because I respect what the Captain was trying to do, breaking all known rules in music. Also the album has a great cover, and the song names are imaginative.

But I cannot get my head round most of the music. And before you label it "random sound", Van Vliet and his charges rehearsed for months before recording.

Better Beefheart albums include Safe As Milk and Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot, which are less freaky.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - fast and bulbous!
An incredibly original synthesis of Dadaism, Blues, Rock, Jazz and Beat poetry.

The layering of disparate elements is a key feature of this music, as is band members simultaneously playing in different keys and time signatures (tho' not all the time) making it both a challenging and rewarding listen.

Beefheart's lyrics are brilliant, and the spoken word pieces ('Orange Claw Hammer' and 'The Dust Blows Forward 'n The Dust Blows Back') show that his words and voice alone carry much weight.

All the musicians are great, but drummer John French (a long-suffering side man of Beefheart, who was thrown out of the band - sometimes physically - as often as he was asked back again!) deserves special credit. His drumming helps glue the sometimes chaotic (sounding - even if the brow-beaten band were drilled like psychedelic shock troops) elements together, and is wildly original and inventive, not that Beefheart gave him the credit: even his band-name, 'Drumbo', was left off the album's credits!

A personal fave is 'Pachuco Cadaver', whose title, and madly percolating bounce (brilliant bass by Rockette Morton) sum up the album's weirdness in an upbeat and fairly easy to digest way. Intense, innovative, and certainly not for all occasions, Trout is stupendous!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - DON'T TRY AND TELL ME THIS AIN'T MUSIC!
That would make a great title for a compilation album don't you think? Anyway I bought this album seven years ago because of the amazing sleeve art coupled with the great song titles on the back I mean how can anyone resist buying an album with a track entitled 'When Big Joan Sets Up', I mean who is Joan why's she so big and what's she trying to set up? These are questions I felt I had to try and answer. I stuck the disk in the machine and laughed almost from beginning to end with the possible exception of the instrumentals and Dachau Blues which was always going to be a bit of a downer.

I have to say though that I found the music itself a bit hard to stomach but I kept on listening coz this Beefheart fella was just so damn funny. I've since learned that Don didn't set out to make a comedy album and he didn't, I just find odd juxtapositions and strange imagery amusing as hell, maybe because I have some undiscovered syndrome I don't know. After a good few listens though I really came to appreciate that the music is just brilliant I mean drumbo has to be one of my favourite drummers of all time. Oh and this isn't 'random noise' these guys had really practiced this stuff, random noise just doesn't sound like that trust me these guys are one of the tightest bands ever as you will see if you go see them touring without the Captain, they don't even need count-ins it's like they share a brain or something! This is very controlled chaos which is why it's so exiting still. This is possibly not the best intro to Mr.Vleit's work though, try Bat Chain Puller if you want a more accessible introduction to the man.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Not at all random
I'll make this short as possible - I first heard this album in 1969 when John Peel used to play it incessantly. When I bought it I didn't stop playing it - so it is impossible for me to make objective comments. I still listen to it regularly now.

However I note that one reviewer refers to the 'random' sounds played by the band. Sorry but you're wrong, I saw the Magic Band in the early seventies and everything they played from this album was played note for note - almost an exact Replica of the record in fact.

Just because Beefheart composed and got his musicians to play in a manner somewhat different to just about anyone else, don't be fooled into thinking that much of this is random. In fact I think you'll find that the band undertook rigorous rehearsals prior to recording.

If you ask me I would say this is amongst the top innovative albums of all time BUT that isn't a recommendation. It won't suit everyone.
