Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - What on Earth is this?
This is without doubt one of the weirdest things I've ever heard. Ever. It makes the Beatles' Revolution Number 9 sound like a nice, simple pop song in comparison. On this recording, the Captain and co. merge together blues, freeform jazz, avant garde and spoken word to create something the likes of which hadn't been heard before, or probably since either (except on more Beefheart records of course). All very interesting, I hear you say, and on this account comparisons to Zappa or Gong may crop up. Yet Beefheart takes the freeform apprach to a whole new level- most of the stuff here, like Frownland or Dachau Blues sounds like every member of the group was told to record what the hell they want and then it was all pasted together. Random and amateurish? Not a chance. To break the rules, you've gotta know the rules, and to play stuff in such crazy, syncopated timings like this requires a level of skill rarely heard today. Beefheart's freeform poetry for me is the most interesting aspect of the record though, picking out the words and then trying to make sense of lines such as 'Peeled n felts fields n belts impaled on n daeman' on Neon Meate Dream of A Octafish is a joy. Listening to this all the way through in one sitting is a bit like running a half-marathon; it's uneasy and demanding, but you feel strangely better for it afterwards. Naturally, such a bonkers album isn't going to be to everyone's taste (personally, I'd like to see this stuff performed on CD:UK). I'm giving it 3 stars because I think there are better Beefheart albums out there, such as my personal favourite Ice Cream For Crow, and its insane weirdness limits its replayability. Get it anyway to hear something truly unique, and it's definitely worth buying to freak out your friends who like Justin Timberlake when they come round.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A complete classic from 1969: fast & bulbous!
Trout Mask Replica (title!) does have one of the greatest album covers of all time and is the work of Don Van Vliet (the Captain), his apparently abused Magic Band (Zoot Horn Rollo, Antennae Jimmy Semens, The Mascara Snake, Rockette Morton & Drumbo) & was produced by Frank Zappa. Both Van Vliet and Zappa would have a major influence on music that would follow- suggesting anti-rhythms (later found in a band like The Slits) & an approach towards music that is unconventional: why have a traditonal song? Thus the opening rhythms of something like Frowland throw people off...you've got to keep up!

Trout Mask Replica is probably not the best introduction to the Captain- Safe as Milk and Clear Spot are probably sounder primers. But if you like strange stuff like Ornette Coleman, Pink Flag,The Modern Dance,Suicide,Flowers of Romance,Butthole Surfers, Gris-Gris,Swordfishtrombones etc- then this album is probably for you! Some of it is stripped minimal blues, the Captain's holler like Howlin' Wolf in space- The Dust Blows Forward'n' The Dust Flows Back and Well are wonderful in this pure sense and moments of poetic still between the jazz-inflected psychedelia approach to guitars, the deliberate dischord, of the majority of the album.

The emperor's new clothes?- tosh- you simply haven't listened enough, you have to pay attention and let it seep into you; not all albums are instant classics! So many great songs here, my faves include She's Too Much for My Mirror, Moonlight on Vermont, Well, Ella Guru, Wild Life, Dachau Blues & Orange Claw Hammer. The musical notions, blending blues'n'jazz with psychedelia, push the frontier & these lyrics remain mindblowing poetry. Music should be challenging- this was like a punk rock approach to music- is it music?- why not????

There's nothing like Trout Mask Replica, which probably isn;t the Beefheart album I listen to the most, but one I play often. Every home should have one....

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - If you got ears, you gotta listen
No other album has ever come close to this one. It's been dementedly praised by many people for years with full justification, but it's undeniably a bit disorientating on the first listen. I didn't understand it for six months and then one day suddenly decided it was the best thing I'd ever heard. The precise moment this happened was during Ella Guru when the Captain says "That's right the Mascara Snake, fast and bulbous - tight also!" It's a perfect description of the music going on around him, which sounds chaotic and improvised but was in fact carefully composed and rehearsed over eight or nine months. Because, much of the time, each instrument is playing in a different time signature/key/tonality it can be difficult for the listener and next to impossible for the player - but The Magic Band perform musical miracles and play amazingly. The first thing you hear is atonal guitars in 7/8 and 5/4 (I think) and most people's ears can't take that without training. Once you can hear how all the instruments are playing interesting lines individually, you can match them together into the whole piece and hear the beats come together and fall away again in a totally new style of avant/delta blues/folk/rock/free jazz/holler music. The Captain's voice is something else entirely - like Howlin' Wolf with an amazing range and a fondness for crazy skronk sounds. Don't miss Trout Mask Replica, and don't give up after just a few listens - it takes time to get to grips with it, but it's the most endlessly rewarding record I know of. There's just nothing in music remotely like it - genius is the obvious word to apply.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Nice Cover
I'd never heard any of Captain Beefhearts stuff before and since a few of the artists that I listen to regularly quote him as an influence, I thought I'd give it a go.
How I wish I'd saved a fiver and bought something else.
There are a lot of reviews here that praise the inventiveness off the 'music' and yes, it is truly off the wall - to the point of complete inaccessibility. I'm giving it a big chance but the 'clicking' just isn't happening. Maybe I need some drugs or something to appreciate it but Ventolin obviously isn't strong enough.
I'll give it one star, 'cos I think the cover is a great photo but there are some great lyrics here that are just lost in a durge of random sound.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Greatest Rock Album of All Time ?
Trout Mask Replica is quite simply sublime - years ahead of its time and a shining example of the avant garde potential of rock music at its most inventive.Tracks such as Moonlight on Vermont and Veterans' Day Poppy are staggering achievements and shining examples of an era in which rock was regarded as a medium for the creation of innovative works of art.
