Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Greatest Rock Album of All Time ?
Trout Mask Replica is quite simply sublime - years ahead of its time and a shining example of the avant garde potential of rock music at its most inventive.Tracks such as Moonlight on Vermont and Veterans' Day Poppy are staggering achievements and shining examples of an era in which rock was regarded as a medium for the creation of innovative works of art.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - More poetry than jazz
I bought this album when it came out(!) and it was strange even in a time of strangeness. 30+ years on it is the poetry and band arrangements which strike me as the power of this album. The odd clunky sound of the guitars stems from the total lack of effects used. Were they plugged straight into the mixer? These days we use effects on everything, for better or worse. Because of this 'primitive' sound some of the backing tracks appear to have been recorded in someone's front room. I can only assume this was intentional: Frank Zappa was at the controls. Given the sound and the use of 'live' material, conversations with girls and schoolboy jokes regarding bodily functions, recording over a phone line, the whole album has a huge intimacy - a slice out of time. Beefheart's poetry is truly beautiful and bizarre. I wouldn't describe the honkings of the bass clarinet on various tracks as jazz. They are too outlandish and, may I be forgiven, not set in any sort of a jazz context. The basic format of the music is I suppose chemical blues but really the only format is that of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. Favourite track? Hmm. For poetry The Dust Blows Forward and the Dust Blows Back. For sheers craziness (it must be) The Blimp. Gimme some of that old time religion.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Electric blues as if performed by Picasso.
A happy jangle of spiky guitars, cross rhythms and abrupt changes. Beefheart's first truly innovative album, it can take a bit of getting used to, but like chilli flavoured ice-cream it actually works beautifully when you accept its own rules.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The Emporer's New Album
I've tried, honestly I really did give this album a chance, but 95% of the sounds on it are just not music. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but to me (seemingly) random sounds are not music. I like albums that take a few listens before the magic starts to shine through, but I can really see no merit in this. Ever heard the story of the Emporer's New Clothes? Stop pretending to like this to appear knowledgable and hip.
However, if you do like this kind of thing then I can also recommend "Brown Reason To Live" by the Butthole Surfers. Pure pap.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - not free jazz! marvellous mixture of magic
As a young music fan previously wowed by the charm of The Byrds and the enigmatic Stephen Malkmus from Pavement amongst others, I discovered Beefheart through Safe As Milk, a great introduction to his work. But Trout Mask is incredible - undescribably good.

The rather trigger-happy typist who reviewed the captain as having maybe missed the point totally missed the point himself citing Trout Mask as having free jazz connections. Beefheart only ever improvised sax solos; the music on the albums was carefully and meticulously planned - no element of randomness at all.

This album contains some wonderful and marvellous musical masterpieces such as the instantly catchy 'moonlight on vermont' with guitars so angular and well-placed it gives the listener a pleasant writhing sensation inside. After plenty of listening, things like MY HUMAN GETS ME BLUES, you realise, can't be reached by any band. Beefheart's vision is unsurpassable; too strong, too individual.
