Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The end of popular music
This is a record that I have owned now for nineteen years, on cassette, LP and CD. It has infuriated, enraged and enriched me, in equal measure, during that time. ...
Nineteen years on, and every time I listen to it, something new in there makes sense at last. The best records refuse to give up their secrets immediately. They hold something back for later. Trout is still doing that for me. It is endlessly fresh. I suppose there will come a time, maybe when I am drawing my pension, when I feel that it has nothing left to offer. I am not looking forward to that day.
When they write the history of 20th century popular music Trout will be seen as the end point, the exclamation mark at the end of its development. After this all that could be done was recycle what had gone before, to beat a retreat to easier and more digestible fare.
The greatest records are usually inspired by pain and misery, or anger, frustration and angst. We all know how kids feel. The best thing about Trout is its sense of fun, of playfulness, and the sense that anything is possible when you see things as a child would.
When I find a woman who doesn't give me a pitying look, or a howl of pain, when I play this to her, I will ask her to marry me.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the 20th C. Greatest Artistic Achievements
I heard this album upon its first release, being lead to it after having an older sibling expose me to Safe As Milk. Rather than confounding me at first listen, it was an instant fit, with the wordplay and instrumental complexity just engaging me on every possible level. It stands as a--if not THE--high-water mark of rock 'n roll.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - not what i expected to be honest
well......tis mighty weird.......and its nowhere near as good as safe as milk(which is very good by the way).....if you want a bunch of songs that dont really have melody or anything then this is your cd...if you want some good CB music i heartiuly recommend safe as milk(i wish i bought it first instead)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Er.. er... don't have a clue....... GENIUS!!!
First time I listened to this, it sounded like the worst, most grotesque and nastiest abortions of noise that I had heard. But I knew that it was just utterly fucking brilliant. One of the most unique sounding albums ever made. Just the way that the instruments are played.. best described as raping them, really.. and the way it is all just torn apart and vommitted at you.. melodies, notes so fucked up and chaotic, yet so peversely beautiful and perfect in their ugliness, in a way that I will never understand.I just know this is genius.. Captain Beefheart easily one of the greatest musicians of all time, and this is, I think, his best album. His voice is fucking incredible... from a gutteral roar to a squeaky, girly, muppet-like vocal.. poems about god knows what, spoken as if they are the most important information you will ever hear.. don't know if this album is happy, sad, angry or what.. the music is so discordant, so erratic, so fucked up that it is brilliant. love it more and more every time I hear it. It seems to get bigger every time you listen to it.. finding melodies, beauty in the discord and chaos.. a nasty experience listening to it, and yet such a wonderful, amazing, mindblowing record. Quite simply, utterly fucking brilliant.. though I don't know why, and I never will..

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Smarter than your average genius
A lot of people buy this album because they've heard John Peel call the good Captain a genius. They thus conclude that Trout Mask Replica will be like the white album, but just a bit wackier. Y'know, in a Zappa-esque way. But forget it! Beefheart is not a rock genius. This is not a classic rock album. This is Ornette Coleman free-jazz meets the blues. To say this is a classic rock album would be a terrible mistake. It's that kind of critique that leads people into buying this album only to find that they can't for the life of them get from one end of it to the other, never mind understand it. "It's not music!" is a common cry, and I suppose technically speaking, it isn't very tuneful. But if you like Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk then you might just like this. Likewise, if you own Bone Machine or Frank's Wild Years by Tom Waits then Trout Mask Replica is well worth a listen. But this album is just so different that you can never really tell who will like it. The only people you can recommend it to are people who already know they like it! I am one of those poeple, I love Trout Mask Replica!
