It's like all music albums/bands in life, they never reach their peak without making an average or poor album. In MoS' case, this probably is their most 'average album between the 1995-2000 era, before what I call the 'kids albums' era. But as a previous reviewer said, it's still better than the stuff being pumped out now.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad album at all. I think I was just a bit suprised to hear it sounded alot more mellow and dull than the other 90's albums, but 1997 did have a very unique theme, and this album captures a mix of the dark acid house sounds (the excellent Somethin' goin on), with some good summer tracks (Like Sunchyme). I found Cd1 the most enjoyable, as it kept the house music and really captured 'that' sound.
I felt Boy Georges attempt on cd2 was the average part. The mixing was as good as always, but the song choice is a bit bland. It's also unusual that the 1st half of this second cd is all break-beat, which was a suprise. But of course, some of the years best tunes here as always, from Your Not Alone (though not the best mix) and Breathe by Progidy. The mix of Free was slightly dissapointing too, as that was quite a popular song back in 97. Cd2 is alot more darker than the first, so its not as enjoyable unless you listen to it on a dark winter night, and it fits the mood totally. But it does sound rather bland.
Spread across the album are some songs that really stand out from the rest. Belo Horizonti has been used for many programs - including "The Cruise" which makes sense with its party rhythm. Sunchyme is another classic 90's track, and the final track, Get up, go Insane! is really uplifting, and has that superb 90's sound with its great piano rhythm
So while it's not the best album MoS released, their other albums during the 5 year period more than make up for this - The Annual vol.2 being the absolute finest, and The Annual IV being a lovely smooth summer album, and a great way to make up for this!
So, while this may not be the most complete annual produced, its worth buying for CD1 alone. Just one question though... why wasn't Flaming June on here??? It's only one of th best trance tunes of the 90's!

This was the first Ministry of sound album I bought and loved it straight away, Its not the best MOS album but its so much better than the drizzle they are pumping out today. Its a great cross over from the early 90's acccid generation to the end of 90,s house and trance and you can hear both influences in this album. Spin Spin suger ,Rip Groove and Turn me out (Turn To Suger) stand out on this album for me especialy the latter. I think you have to have been around enjoying the clubbing sceane in the mid-late 90's to appreaciate this album most. Infact one time in My then regular nighthaunt late 97 the DJ played the album instead of DJing himself (The cheek) and it sounded fantistic blasting out at around 700 watts!

As Quoted on the Albums Cover - "This Album celebrates another wicked year standing between those towering speakers". And what a corker of an album it is! Including tracks from Armand Van Helden " Sugar is sweeter" and many more (this track beeing my favorite). Disk Two, by pete tong really shows the movment of the ministry!
