Music : The Best of The Specials

How you can describe a collection as `Best of The Specials' when it doesn't contain their second number one single `Ghost Town' and that their first number one single `Too Much Too Young' be the tamer album version rather than the version from the live EP which topped the charts.
Other omissions would be the debut single `Gangsters' and both singles from the second album. That the sleeve notes cannot bear to use the titles of either `Gangsters' or `Ghost Town' in telling the history of the group show us a disrespect of the past of Stalin-esque proportions.
The album does contain three b-sides and seven album only tracks and does give a broad introduction to the fantastic work of the Specials but such a misleading title does nothing for the reputation of the band and definitely reflects badly on Disky Communications as they appear to be cashing-in on the legacy of the band.
Anyone looking for a comprehensive overview of The Specials I can recommend either `The Specials Singles' or the new `The Best of The Specials' issued by EMI to punctuate the new reformation, hopefully a dawning of a new era.

I'm sure die-hard Specials fans will find some obscure B-sides on here, but I was really looking for their best hits. Imagine my surprise to find no 'Ghost Town'. That'll teach me to read the track listing in future, eh?

- The greatest songs from Britain's greatest ska band
The specials were one of the leading bands in the ska movement of the 80s and this album shows exactly why. With some of their own biggest hits, 'A message to you rudy,' and 'Rat race,' and a fantastic cover of Bob Dylan's 'Maggie's farm,' this album is a must for any fan. Their political orientated lyrics and catchy offbeat rhythms create a fantastic ska album that brings back fantasic memories of the period in which they were so great.
