Music : Guilty 'Til Proved Innocent!

The reformed Specials previous album `Today's Specials' was universally condemned for being an album of covers and so to right this on `Guilty `Till Proved Innocent' The Specials collect together 15 `original' compositions.
Roddy Radiation AKA Byers was always The Specials second most prolific writer and so it is appropriate that four of the 15 songs should be written by him. They are amongst the best of the songs collected here especially album opener `Tears in my Beer' which is reminiscent of the original Specials however the claim to original compositions is somewhat defeated by `Bonediggin' and `Man With No Name' had been recorded previously by Roddy's post Specials bands.
New boy and Terry Hall impersonator Mark Adams also contributes four songs which are very Specials by numbers and bring nothing to the band. Horace Panther writes the turgid `Fearful' and shows us why he left off writing in the original Specials.
Neville Staples wrote the remaining five songs of which the best is `Running Away' which is probably explained by it being Jamaican ska and Specials standard `Monkey Man' but with the lyrics slightly changed. It truly is The Specials covering The Specials, hardly original.
On top of all this are live covers of Special classics `Rat Race', `Concrete Jungle' and `Gangsters' which serve no other purpose that to show us that this band is nothing but a pale imitation of the original Specials. We can only hope that the 2008 reformation is of a higher standard than this.
