Rating:
- It will change your view of musicFrom the opening rock 'n' roll riff of 'Foxy Lady' to the closing rythm and blues of 'Highway Chile', 'Are You Experienced' remains the most influential guitar album ever made. It is impossible to do it justice with mere words, but I'll do my best. Originally containing fourteen tracks, with three singles (the last three on here) released as well, it now has all seventeen sonmgs that had been released at the time. Of course, The Jimi Hendrix Experience was a band - and a hot one at that - but everything was, and still is, focused on Hendrix. Arguably the first guitar virtuoso, he completely revolutionised the guitar's sonic capabilities, and showed the likes of Clapton and Townshend how to play like a God. The styles on here are rich and varied. Hendrix could play: blues - 'Red House', 'Remember' rock - 'Foxy Lady', 'Stone Free' psychedelia - 'Third Stone From The Sun', 'Are You Experienced' r 'n' b - 'Highway Chile' softer songs - 'May This Be Love', 'The Wind Cries Mary' or combine it all into 'Purple Haze' Not to mention the fact that he was experimenting with all sorts of effects peddles that gave his music a whole new facet at the time - and still. The guitar playing is superlative, but he is also a brilliant songwriter; just listen to 'Purple Haze'. The quality of his bandmates is also superb - Noel Redding, the bassist, and Mitch Mitchell, the drummer, are two masters of their field. Okay, so they are vastly outshone by their genius guitarist and singer, but they are excellent nonetheless, and crucial to the whole 'experience'. 'Are You Experienced' is without a doubt the greatest and most influential debut album of all time. It's influence is ongoing - The Experience are still selling three-million albums per annum, a lot of which will be 'Are You Experienced'. I cnnot tell you how much I recommend this album, which may be the best ever (which you may read a lot, but this really is the biz.) Rating: - Are You Experienced yet? If not, hurry up and become so.In a year when the likes of Cream, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and The Doors were all releasing legendary albums, The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their first album. And what an album it was. The guitar playing is awesome, still unmatched today, and the songs are equally superlative. For me, this is the greatest debut album of all time, matched only by Pink Floyd's 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'. Hendrix draws from a wide variety of moods; happy, sad, angry, joyful, brooding, uplifting, humurous etc and combines blues, r and b, psychedelia and flat out rock n'roll to create a unique sound and a magnificent album. Songs such as 'Purple Haze' and 'Highway Chile' are well-known and loved classics, but each song on here is amazing. The opener, 'Foxy Lady', is bursting with energy, and sets the tone for the album. Vastly underrated gems include the seminal blues track 'Red House', the brilliant 'Fire' and the title-track. What helps make this album so great is the support the Hendrix had. Noel Redding (the bassist) was a solid platform for the band to function on, whilst Mitch Mitchell's drumming has only ever been surpassed by a select few drummers e.g. Keith Moon. Hendrix's lead guitar will (deservedly) take most of the plaudits, but due credit must go to Redding and Mitchell for doing what they did, and doing it so well. Everyone knows who Jimi Hendrix is - he is the greatest guitarist of all time, after all. But far too many people will state that without having actually heard him play, or having only heard a couple of his songs. That can lead to an emporer's clothes effect; everyone sys it's great without thinking for themselves e.g Eric Clapton, who is rubbish. And whilst songs such as 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)' and 'All Along The Watchtower' are well-known for showcasing his astonishing virtuosity, there is plenty of that on 'Are You Experienced' too. This is as essential as any album out there, as many people will all too willingly testify. No-one has ever, or will ever, change/d guitar as much as Hendrix did. He was a true genius. If you don't already own this album, then hurry up and buy it. It is on par with the greatest albums of all time. An unreserved TEN STARS. Rating: - Ten Stars!A truly stunning album, easily one of the best first efforts by any group, any time. There's not much to be said apart from that, but the musicianship and songs are marvellous. Mitch's drumming is superb throughout and Noel's under-rated bass playing is solid but inventive. Hendrix never really surpassed this in terms of its freshness and general impact, although he steadily grew as a musician after its release. The variety on the album is unsurpassed, except by The Beatles: jazz (Third Stone from the Sun); blues (Red House); R&B soul (Fire, Remember), even a hard rock waltz (Manic Depression) and a surf song (May This Be Love). There are two re-issues of this album around. The best has the original UK running order, starting with Foxy Lady, and the six bonus tracks (Hey Joe, Purple Haze, etc) at the end of the CD. It also has the original UK cover, which is a bit daggy. The other issue has the US running order, which has Purple Haze as its first track, and then the six bonus tracks (Red House, Can You See Me, etc) at the end. This has the 'fish eye' cover, which is more suited to the music. You get the same songs, but the UK issue has the running order as Hendrix intended. Both versions have the same sound, remastered by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original engineer. Rating: - Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced - GeniusHere is Jimi. If you buy no other music of Jimi Hendrix, buy this album. Before his untimely death, Jimi made many statements. One was, 'When I die, just keep playing the records!' Today, over thirty six years on from his death, The Experience's music is still beautiful, wonderful, and revolutionary. Emulated by many, but never reproduced. ONLY The Experience could produce the true sound. Having been with them at The Albert Hall in '69, you can take it from me, this was one of the greatest trio's I have ever had the priveledge to see and hear. The word is magical, simply magical! Rightly, Jimi was and still is regarded as a true musical genius. Some riffs borrowed, some riffs new, but never forget the man who in such a short time gave us creative music like a religion. Music was Jimi's religion. He was one of the first great experimenters with electronic guitar effects, which in those days were relatively new. Let's not forget Mitch Mitchell on drums, and Noel Redding too on bass. Both superb. Without these two wonderful musicians in support, the true sound of The Experience would never have been realised. Just listen to the tracks, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Foxey Lady, Fire etc and you will know it. Just feel the vibe from these tracks. You can feel it. Just feel it. Truly superb! Forget owning the Hendrix guitar.....own something much more important.....the legacy that The Experience left us.....Jimi, Mitch, and Noel left this for us all to enjoy for all time. Here's your chance to find out what The Experience was. Want to become 'Experienced?' Rating: - Brilliant JimiJimi Hendrix, R.I.P, has always been brilliant and in my opinion the best guitarist ever. He shows this on this cd. Woth the opener, Foxy lady the riff is unforgettable. It features great lyrics, especially on the chorus. Manic depression is alright, but skippable after a few listens, it doesn't feature, in my opinion, jimi's best performances ever, as is the same for the next track Red House. Can you see me is good but not as good as the other classics on this. Love or confusion is very good with good guitar bits and a good beat, jimi is good on this one. I don't live today is again alright but not brilliant. May this be love is very good with good beats and a good performance from jimi both musicaly and vocaly. Fire is good with a good beat and again a solid vocal performance. Third stone from the sun is very good and is nearly on a par with the other classics on this album. Remember is good, but nothing special. Are you experienced is very good, you can't really fault it, unless you were very picky. Hey Joe is the best song on the album. Very emotional and is an instant classic. The jimi hendrix experience does this one brilliantly. Stone free is excellent, another classic with an excellent guitar riff during the chorus. Purple haze is amazing with the best riff on the album. 51st aniversary is alright but nothing special. Wind cries mary is yet another classic. Highway chile is the closer, and it is good. Overall this is excellent. Many classics are on here and very few filler material. If you only get one jimi album, get this. |
