Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What a difference Digital Remastering makes : )
I first heard this Album (without the bonus tracks) within a few weeks of its original release when the lad resident in a holiday boarding house I was staying at played it for me...Repeatedly.
Mostly I was more puzzled than impressed. Well, I gradually got used to this very new sound, the whole Hendrix thing grew on me and before long I had my own vinyl copy as the first of what was to become a moderately respectable collection of Hendrix Experience stuff.

Fast forward Eeek years and what's happened to it?

First impression was 'What've they done to it'! - The vocal track seems maybe 20% to 30% more dominant now than on the original. But then, that could be down to better player media. If its not that then it's the vagarities of a fading memory - hard to be sure.

What has benefited from the better production options now available is the detail and the general balance of the sound. Again its not *quite* the same (to my ears) as the original. There's a shade more engineering, more pronounced shifting between channels which I don't remember hearing on the original - More reminiscent of techniques which I suspect might not have been available to the Experience and their mixers 'til Electric Ladyland. The 'depth' of the sound stage is greater too.
But its not intrusive, its an enhancement.

And the detail ..... Oh yes the detail. There are small sections which can be clearly made out for the first time.

So is it the same as the original? No, not quite. Its very close, very faithful to it but its sharper. Very grudgingly I have to admit its actually better ...... Once you've re-tuned your ears to balance the vocal track. But like the original album, it helps to hear it a couple of times to appreciate the changes of these very slightly new sounds as benefits.

Would I have bought it knowing how it sounds? No hesitation, I should have got it sooner. Did I mention the bonus tracks on it? - Aghh see for yourself

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simply Superb...
"Are you Experienced" is arguably one of the finest albums ever made. The 'Jimi Hendrix Experience' were just a great band, talent oozing from all aspects of their work.
"Are you Experienced" kicks off with the emblamatic 'Foxy Lady' and a rhythm which expresses the theme superbly. 'Manic Depression' and 'Love and Confusion' set the trend for much of not only today's guitar based music, but also electronica (the progressive breakdown and build up in 'Love and Confusion' typical of the programming in a modern day trance track!)
Hendrix's talent is endless - not only as a guitar player but also as a songwriter. The experimental 'Third Rock from the sun' has a guitar riff which tears right through you. Homage must also be paid to Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass, who both work beautifully alongside Hendrix's bountiful imagination.
If you like this and are impressed with the talent on offer -- check out Jimi Hendrix live on DVD to get the full picture of just how uniqely gifted this man was

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hendrix at his best
This is the best Jimi Hendrix album there is in my opinion, it has some of the best songs he ever released, including "red house", "hey joe" & "purple haze", and the brilliant "manic depression" & "love or confusion", there are no better Hendrix albums than this, it is definately Hendix at his best, this album is a must for any Hendrix fan.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sonic space-grooves.
It's common currancy among many modern music critics to bemoan the massive amount of technology used in today's music. They cry out for the more "authentic" sounds of the 60's and 70's when technology took a back seat to musicianship. They constantly overlook the example of Jimi Hendrix whose artistic abilities were liberated by technical innovation. By the end of 1966, the Beatles had packed in live performance as they were unable to reproduce on stage what they were then producing in the studio. In less than a year the Jimi Hendrix Experience (along with The Who and Cream) would have both the equipment and amplification nessecary to blow minds on stage with the same degree of intensity they had done on record.

What immediately struck me about 'Are You Experienced' was how prolific Jimi was as a songwriter. Songs, which despite a lot of their improvised nature, displayed strong melodic and harmonic invention. In this sense the role of Noel Redding shouldn't be underestimated. Dispensing with the rhythm guitar, it was Noel who kept the Hendrix Experience rooted to the blues. Without the bass much of the album would have taken on a more free-jazz flavour as Jimi and Mitch improvised freely. Mitch also deserves praise as he matches Jimi almost note for note in his frenetic drum fills e.g. 'Manic Depression' (who writes songs in 9/8 time anymore?).

It's no surprise Jimi had a keen interest in experimental studio techniques. He was an avid science fiction fan and many of his lyrics match the other-worldliness of his playing. Although the blues tracks don't match up to the psychedelic ones in terms of sonic invention, you can still hear Jimi dropping in those fertile touches that would point the way ahead.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - May This Be Love?
With a debut album of this caliber, it blew to peices the first workings of the other great guitarists of the time. This album infact is so good, that its songs such as Foxy Lady, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire, Red House, Are You Experienced and The Wind Crys Mary are some of the most commonly assosiated to Jimi Hendrix, despite his fairly large catalogue of guitar-excellence. The album as a whole has a love at first sight appeal which intensifies every listen. The album itself is mixed very well; each song flows perfectly to the next. Intrestingly, the album is full of mixed styles of music from the blues of Red House and his own style of blues, Manic Depression, to unique psychedelic experimentation of Are You Experienced and Third Stone From The Sun to funky rock with Purple Haze and Fire. Giving all this, one would expect the feel of the album to change drastically as it progressed. This is not the case, for the album feels as one perfect blend culminating to become one of the finest listening experiences you shall ever have. This perfectly crafted album shall not dissapoint and is an essential album to be placed in any collection.
