Music : Nine Deadly Venoms

Well, looking at the other reviews of Nine Deadly Venoms here, it seems this album is universally lauded. However, as with many reviews on Amazon, the only people who bother to write them either love or hate the music. So many average albums seem to receive 4 or 5 stars. Personally, I find this album... ok.
The old movie samples are cool, but really there's nothing else here. The beats are bland, especially when compared to more recent releases on Ninja Tune, Grand Central, Tru Thoughts etc.
The instrumentation is generally rather weak and charmless, the best meoldies being the ones derived from samples.
As this was 1994 and as this type of music has since progressed into much richer uk hip hop and chillout scene, perhaps my expectations were too high.
If you're a fan of upbeat beats, breaks and samples, you could do worse than this CD. But you could also definitely do a lot better.

If you like beats a la unkle and early chemical / dust brothers plus martial arts and westerns (sampled to great effect) then buy this. If you don't you are a sock cooker.
Rating: - the best lp ever recorded
This is my favourite album of all time. Sample laden (sourced from the simpsons to the 5 venoms),
killa beatz (ranging from pumped up hip hop to dub) and with a strong sense of humour i can not praise this album enuff.
this is one album you can sling on over and over and never tire of - the man is a genius.
also worth checking out is anything on electron industries.

I was fortunate enough to (bizarrely) receive this CD free with a copy of Ninja game Tenchu 2 for Playstation. The samples from Kung-Fu flicks, horror and Italian Football are hilarious, edgy and pefect. The musician J. Saul Kane apparently has another album which is even weirder. This album is an exciting death-trip into a pop-culture hell-world. And if U have either Tenchu games it really improves the action! Booya!
Rating: - Perfect sample-based big-beat, catchy techno & flowing tunes
With unique samples from Kung-Fu films, Spaghetti Westerns and horror flicks connecting ear candy-like electonic sounds this album is perfect to listen to no matter what mood u are in. I love it and you have to give it a try. Some songs you will like instanly, others will grow on you but one things for sure, this may be the only album you will never get bored of. This album laid down the precedant for big-beat and has never been bettered. I listen to this whilst chilling at home on rainy days and my head starts nodding and the gorgeous sounds put a smile on my face; and when friends come round I turn it up to get a lively and happy atmosphere going. Do I like this album too much? I've had it for four years, I've bought about two hundred albums since and its still my favourite!
