Music : 1984 for Love of Big Brother

- An Apt tribute to the Masterpiece
How did Eurythmics come up with such a storming and appropriate piece of music?. Having seen the film and read the book numerous times I am astonished that a band coould put together such a musical likeness. Its uncanny how well the music meets the mood of the book.
And I recently heard that very little of this musical genius was used?...what would Jaws or Good/Bad/ugly be without their accompanying music?
The music is gloomy as one would expect with references to concepts in the book (doubleplusgood, malibar front, bb's speech etc.). 'For the love of Big Brother" captures that gloominess best but the song is very infectious with wonderful female harmonies. 'doubleplusgood" is very fast and almost poppy, in a singles sort of way.
The award for best song, however goes to "julia" which is one of the most saddest/romantic tunes you're ever likely to hear....great metaphors of death and destruction yet a feeling of hope..a la "leaves turn from green to brown" ...Awesmely beautiful
I have always admired the songwriting ability of the Eurythmics With this masterpiece they have joined the elite.
Unreservedly buy but read the book first!!!

The Eurythmics weren't the first to try recreating Orwell's chilling novel in musical form. Several years previously, David Bowie had done the same with half of the tracks on his "Diamond Dogs" album. However, this album captures Eurythmics at (another) artistic high. Coming off the commercial success of "Touch", they were asked to formulate a soundtrack for the movie "1984". What they finally produced is arguably one of the most abstract yet fantastic film soundtracks to date- too bad director Michael Radford didn't see this when he originally included only 15 seconds worth on the first film version. The album starts brilliantly with the drip-drop sounds of "I Did It Just The Same", a track which hasn't aged at all. This swiftly moves into "Sexcrime (1984)", one of the most dance-orientated songs the duo have ever made and one of their most successful. Other gems on this album include a ballad dedicated to "Julia", the anti-heroine of the novel, "Minisry of Love", a haunting yet energetic audio version of the department where Winston is eventually taken and "Greeting from a Dead Man", a hypnotic dance beat merged with Lennox's piercing vocals. There are 2 small disappointments, however, with this album. Firstly, it seems to be quite short when compared to other albums, but secondly, some tracks like "Julia" are slightly too long (6 minutes and 30 seconds). BUT, a promising album with an excellent showcase of vocal pyrotechnics and electronic soundscapes. Wait til you see what the duo produced next...
Rating: - A Haunting Soundtrack
This is unlike any other Eurythmics Album you will own.It's a haunting and moving soundtrack. The Music beautifully mirrors the dark feel of the Movie.Annie Lennox's Vocals are amazing and on some tracks she uses her voice as an instrument, singing no actual words at all.This album shows the exceptional musical talents of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox and makes an interesting additon to any Eurythmics fans collection.Overall a great piece of work which I really can recommend.
Rating: - The Motion Picture Soundtrack to Richard Burtons last film
Without going into too much detail, if you are a Eurythmics fan looking for the back catalogue it's a must, musically unique and almost un-Eurythmic like (pure Dave Stewart)in places. There are some haunting themes like Message fron a Dead Man and Room 101, plys of course the big hit Sexcrime and lesser known Julia. Not their best work ever and quite clearly a soundtrack, they used virtually none of it in the film! Own it just for Julia, arguably a reworking of Jennifer (Sweet Dreams) in it's melancholy, it's haunting beauty rarely fails to move me.
