This might have been a surprise to most in 1994 due to the previous albums progressively becoming more epic and slower. I was marginally disappointed at the time because I felt Quorthon had already accomplished what he needed in this area but the fact is there is some very good and powerful material on here. The guitar work is good but in my opinion what let the album down was the drum sound, which appears artificial and doesn't blend with the general sound. The other thing against the album is that some of this material could have been developed further to create something more than just hard thrash, for example there was plenty of speed and power on Blood Fire Death but the songs often went through tempo changes and various evolutionary phases, making the album as a whole much more interesting.
So, Requiem is a real good blast of thrash/near-black metal but its potential was unrealised unfortunately. Stand-out tracks are Apocalypse, Suffocate, and Nectroticus. Blood & Soil, Pax Vobiscum, and War Machine are also great tracks.

- Bathory- Requiem
What can I say?? After the excellent sreies of Black metal leading into Viking metal, this was a bit of a nice surprise from Quorthon an co. The death/thrash on offer isn't produced too well, but nothing made by Bathory has ever had much money spent on it (hope springs eternal with the new one set for release in 2001, Destroyer of Worlds).
I love the 9 songs on here, especially Pax Vobiscum. The lyrics carry on Quorthons views about Christianity, which aren't healthy, but he doesn't like Satan, oh no, his are the gods of Valhalla. After taking the nice, doom and gloom appoach with songs like One ROde To Asa Bay. He finally vents some anger, on songs like 'Crosstitution' and 'Pax Vobiscum'.
The only problem with this CD, is the lack of any form of liner note. Even the songs are in alphabetical order! All the lyrics apart from the ones for 'Crosstitution' and 'Pax Vobiscum' have been censored, so I'm not sure what he's going on about, but i'm pretty sure it's some form of death-related experiences.
