Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Nighthawks at the Diner
Sung with a deep and melodramatic voice, these tracks have an unmistakable feel of cabaret about them - but in a cool, Edith Piaf/Jacques Brel sort of way. Doleful accordions weep in the background as Dani Klein's alto tells tales of bad men and desperate love, and you can imagine nighthawks slouching over their absinthe in, as one track specifies, "a sleazy part of town". Very Edward Hopper.

They pull it off, though. All this seedy, sexy, tango-ish over-the-top melancholia actually works. Just about every song on this CD is instantly recognisable. The sound is latino-inspired, but filtered through the chanson-tradition of the group's native Belgium. This best-of album spans two decades, from their first hit, jazzy "I Don't Want To Know" (mid-eighties) to big belter "Evening of Love" (early nineties). Once or twice, the CD strays dangerously close to power-ballads, but mostly it's an irresistible mix of flamenco, rock'n'roll, blues and jazz, which should be in the jukebox of every self-respecting joint.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - melancholy, groove, tango...... awseome
This album takes you from smoky Parisienne bars to downtown Havanna via the savannahs of Africa. This lady's voice will haunt you with it's dusky quality. I can't fault this album - and nor can any of my friends!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sunday afternoon, newspapers, pastis, the plaza, Aix en Proven
You don't need to have an understanding of French to appreciate the quality of this album - if you like their way of life it is enough. From the haunting first track 'Don't cry for Louis' which conjures up images of rainy French streets and smoky bars, through to the more upbeat 'Johnny' this album has something for everyone. It wanes a little toward the end - the songs have less substance, but if you are after a reminisce of time spent in France, then this is the album for you.
