Musically and lyrically this is by far the most innovative, eclectic and above all listenable 'hip-hop' albums I've heard since De La Soul's '3ft High'. Each track has it's own individual appeal and stands on it's own merits - certainly no filler here - with it's definite British ruggedness and humour. Up there with Massive Attack's 'Blue Lines' as a benchmark for British talent.

Roots manuvas album does nuff for the hip hop of england!!
The beats are strong and original and the lyrics meanfull and performed well.

This is an album that is sure to appeal the true lovers of deep felt Hip Hop and will stick out like a sore thumb to those who dabble. Innovative is perhaps the wrong word, but original is not. Rodderick Manuva has bought me hours of pleasure with an album that plays host to a Hip Hop sound for all moods. When you fall into the almost frightening sounds of Sinking Sands your spine will shiver frantically. Then you can dip into the real street sound of Big Tings and bounce with the boys and to top this album off Motion 5000 will drive you wild with an almost Tragic Operatic string riff to kick things off, but lifting you higher as soon as that BIG Kick comes in. Wicked production that suits the lyrics of Roots Manuva. The emceeing features some of the most original lyrics for a while. An essential purchase, more quality hip hop from the UK!

The first I heard of Roots Manuva was his "lazy tuxedo grooves" on 'Very Mercinary' (Herbaliser). His lyrical style and content struck a very strong cord in me.
This album is class. Yes, I'm biased - I share alot the sentiments expressed. But, even if you just have a passing interest in hip-hop, this album is a must. It is seminal.
Justin: What's wrong with the production. Don't you think it's intentionally lo-fi on some of the tracks? The idea isn't to create a polished piece of plastic...
One really refreshing aspect of Roots Manuva's discourse is the lack of the need for self gratification which seems to infect so much hip-hop.
I could write reams about this album... It's rich in soul, rhyme, intellect, humanity, funk.......
No hype needed - it stands firmly on its own feet and then soars to where few can reach.
