Music : Stranger On The Shore/A Taste of Honey

Born Bernard Stanley Bilk but using the name Acker Bilk for professional purposes, he became part of the British traditional jazz boon of the early sixties and had five UK top ten hits and seven lesser UK hits, all but one of his hits being between 1960 and 1963. This twofer only includes two hits but the biggest of all (Stranger on the shore) is here - in its original form, not a re-recording. The other hit here is A taste of honey.
Stranger on the shore is actually a very sad song. Although Acker performs it as an instrumental, his clarinet proves o be the ideal instrument to highlight the sadness of the song. Acker's version made number one in America and number two in Britain despite competition from other excellent (vocal) versions of the song.
Elsewhere on this twofer, you can hear Acker's interpretations of such classics as Greensleeves, Sentimental journey, Deep purple, Carolina moon, Only you, Underneath the arches, Nature boy and Always - just to name a few. The clarinet has never sounded better than when played by Acker.
The two albums that make up this twofer provide a fine showcase for Acker's talents. If you like sixties instrumental music, you will surely enjoy this.

A CD of Acker Bilk at his very best with the underrratd Leon Young String Chorale, of Stranger On The Shore/A Taste Of Honey it would be unwise to choose individual efforts from this collection as it is a very relaxing CD to listen to. And of course a track that speaks for itself is Stranger On The Shore A timeless track and 55 weeks in the chart is the form on which you can judge a collection of very fine music to relax and wind down with after a hard day and just let yourself driftaway.
