The first time I heard Jewel was on daytime TV in the 90s. I took the day off work as I wasn't feeling very well. She sang You Were Meant For Me, and I was absolutely captivated, enthralled, for the few minutes she had the screen she had me transfixed, and by the end of the song I was in tears. After that I immediately ordered a copy of this album, and was elated to discover that every song on Pieces Of You was as magical.
Here was an Alaskan girl whose folk songs could hush the world. Her songs are personal and poetic, you feel privileged that she is allowing you into her world; a place of beauty, calm, warmth, and replete with teenage perspectives that are innocent and uplifting.
More than anything it is her angelic yet vulnerable voice and her poignant lyrics that make this album the huge success it was, and just as memorable and playable today. It is a brave producer that strips a record bare in this manner, but it was the right decision to let Jewel do what she does best without the distraction of the over-production that she would later fall foul of. And with 12 million sales of this album in the U.S. alone, there is no arguing that this raw acoustic formula sells records in vast numbers.
Once you have entered Jewel's world, you never want to leave... your own reality will feel humdrum in comparison.

I've had this cd and Spirit for a good few years now but have never really known how to describe or quantify it for review purposes. I wanted to say something about it however, so I'll say that it's something you can listen to easily, being of a serene, folky style but you can also ponder about as well. There's quite a few good songs on here and she's a very talented song writer as well as musician and performer. I'd say if you like female vocalists perhaps along the lines of Tori, Kate or Amy with songs about relatable experiences and feelings then this might be for you. She really has her own stamp though and gives a lot of feeling into seemingly simple ideas making it more intimate and less commercial/radio style produce - a reason she's probably not as well known infact, but you can have decent music without being a stadium filler - heartfelt, low key, original & sensitive are preferable in my opinion. Notables are Foolish Games, Save your Soul & I'm Sensitive.

This is an extremely well written début (especially regarding lyrics), and what's even better is that Jewel wrote all of the tracks, minus two that she co-wrote with Steve Poltz.
The first track (and the first single to be released), "Who Will Save Your Soul?", has a good swinging riff, with lyrics about the modern way of living, a theme that is carried on to "Little Sister", about the materialistic and drug-ridden ways of the world. Meanwhile, "Amen" questions nature and religion – a theme also used in the opening track.
The title song, "Pieces of You", has sad guitar music, and the lyrics centre on do we judge people in a certain way because they remind us of ourselves? And "Daddy" has a slow swinging guitar melody that suggests that something is wrong. This fits in with the lyrics, which are at times sarcastic and vengeful – one of the best tracks on the album.
Two tracks tell stories through song. "Painters" is of a pair of artists who face tragedy, and "Adrian" is of a boy damaged at camp who comes home, where the townsfolk believe his life support should be turned off.
Though not all tracks are focused on confronting lyrics. "I'm Sensitive" is a fun little song, while "Angel Standing By" makes the perfect lullaby.
While the standard of lyric writing is high, there is something to be improved upon in the form of music writing. Although the chords and notes used are different and may be played at different paces, there are definite patterns in the music. There seems to be two different groups within the album – the first one consisting of "Who Will Save Your Soul?", "Morning Song", "You Were Meant For Me" and "Daddy"; and a smaller group with "Angel Standing By" and "Amen". Tracks on the following album, "Spirit", also carry on with these similar music styles.
Overall, it's an impressive début with the emphasis clearly on lyrics. Though this trait fades as Jewel's albums progress, it is a quality that undoubtedly has made this album worthy of anyone's music collection.

This is an absolutely amazing album. Jewel in her very own style of a sort of cross breed of rock and country, draws amazing lyrics and deep tunes from the deepest parts of her heart and soul. With this album you gain a real look into the feelings of this fantastic artist as she uses the experiences from her life. I never thought I'd find an album as inspiring, honest, and heart-felt as this, a really true MUST BUY album.
