- A very classy Transfer Christmas!
With some very jazz inspired vocal harmonies and fabulous orchestral arrangements by Johnny Mandel here is a truly gorgeous album of festive favourites performed in the Transfers own inimatable style.
As you would expect from these seasoned performers the harmonies are full and rich. The combination of 2 male / 2 female vocalists allows for good opportunities for much invention and you would think that there were more than just the 4 performers singing.
The first track is Snowfall,a composition by Claude Thornhill from way back but the way it is performed here is stunning.The harmonizing and orchestrations sound fresh and modern giving this very old song a new lease of life.
There are many lovely Christmas favourites on the CD and the sound is excellent.The album has a certain sophistication that I have not heard before on other holiday albums of this genre and the contribution of Johnny Mandel's writing for this fabulous orchestra cannot be over emphasised. This is a quality top-flight orchestra made up of the finest musicians in Los Angeles.This is a full concert style orchestra with strings as well as brass, woodwinds,reeds and percussion.
Recorded digitally in 1992, this album was a departure from the normal fare by this vocal group and I'm so pleased that the project worked so well. If you are a fan of The Manhattan Transfer or you just want something a bit special and different for your Christmas entertaining this CD should be on your list for the holidays this year.
With superb tight and precise vocal harmonies, a lush sweet and swinging orchestra with fabulous arrangements, this album will fit the bill magnificently.
