Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the most accomplished albums ever!
Butterfly was and is the pinnacle moment of Mariah Carey's career. Despite returning in 2005 with the hugely successful and brilliant 'The Emancipation of Mimi' it is highly unlikely that she will ever produce an album of this standard again. The most important thing with this collection is that it works so much better collectively than as singles. The album flows seemlessly from track with lyrics that are her most personal and poignant. This album was written after she divorced with Tommy Motola which has resulted in music directly effected by her pain. The top 5 tracks are:
1. Breakdown: this is my favourite Mariah Carey track ever with brilliant lyrics, arrangements and singing. This song will never age.
2. Whenever You Call: this a very strong ballad with some of her best vocal performance ever.
3. The Beautiful Ones: singing by both Mariah and Dru Hill is incredible. Arguably the best cover of her career.
4. Butterfly: soaring, uplifting and a classic track.
5. Outside: over looked on initial hearing but is stronger each listen with lyrics likely to speak to many.

This album is brilliant despite being a decade old now demonstrating the huge achievement. An essential buy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - THE BEST ALBUM FROM MY CD COLLECTION...
This album is a classic that anyone and everyone should go out and buy to atleast have experienced Mariah Carey's Butterfly era!

HONEY:: the album opens with this new hip hop sound that Puff Daddy brings to Mariah. it's a smooth, r'n'b song that already tells listeners the album will not be bubble gum pop.

BUTTERFLY:: this is one of the best ballads of the album..highlighting the reason why Mariah is the most successful female artist of all time. the song builds up near the end for Mariah to belt out her trademark voice for an emotional end.

MY ALL :: this song's simplicity and melody makes it another great ballad. again, showcasing her talent, with guitar strumming that is unusual from her other albums.

THE ROOF :: this song is one of her best r'n'b songs and it pulls the album together in the way it is smooth yet textured, just like the rest of the album. it contains a hip hop sample where Mariah sings over it in a husky, sultry voice.

FOURTH OF JULY:: this song begins with the twittering of birds and the use of instruments creating a "magical" sound. it is one of the summery tracks of the album...it resembles "Underneath The Stars" from her Daydream album.

BREAKDOWN:: my favourite song from the album. at first it is not a stand out track..however if you listen more closely to what she is saying and the melodious way she sings, it is a beautiful song. Bone Thugs n Harmony lend their deep smooth voices to the slight heartache of the song. its simplicity again makes the song more superb.

BABYDOLL:: this is a full r'n'b song. nothing pop about it. her voice sounds deeper..her backing singers sounds quite gospel. the words are worth taking notice of again.

CLOSE MY EYES:: a beautiful emotional ballad that does not contain high notes, however the soft finger clicking and the pretty way she sings makes this an emotional song talking about her life and her insecurities.

WHENEVER YOU CALL:: this is the version without Brian McNight. i think it sounds better with Mariah on her own. She shines at the end with high notes and a powerful ending. an excellent ballad for fans of the earlier Mariah.

FLY AWAY (BUTTERFLY REPRISE):: a remix feel to her ballad Butterfly. it is sort of like an interlude. very summery. excellent backing vocals and powerful adlibs. GREAT song!

THE BEAUTIFUL ONES:: a duet with Dru Hill remaking the Prince version of this song. even though it is quite a long song..it is worth listening through to the end for AMAZING adlibs and a wonderful mixture of Dru Hill & Mariah.

OUTSIDE:: a ballad about the struggles Mariah had to go through being mixed race. emotional and comes from the heart with a powerful ending where Mariah sings her heart out.

HONEY REMIXES: the so so def remix is quite good. not excellent. the dance remix however (the def club dance mix) by david morales is a HIGHLIGHT of the album. another amazing remix which just sends shivers down my spine. definetly worth listening to!!!!

BUY THE ALBUM. you will not regret it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - sophisticated and beautiful sound
Having listened to this cd on dozens of occasions,I've concluded it's one of my all time favourites. The subtlety, beauty and technical mastery of Mariah's voice (the variety of notes she sings, her ability to switch quickly from a very high pitch to a very low pitch, her ability to hold a note for a long period of time or move up and down through a scale seemingly without effort)is of such a consistently high standard. And her backing singers are great too.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Breakthrough for Mariah Carey and an R&B classic.
This is undoubtedly Mariah's most artistic and professional album to date and having listened to it religiously for the past few years, I can reccommend it without hesitation. For once, Mariah throws herself full force into the genre of R&B she so constantly hinted at with tracks like Fantasy and Dreamlover from previous records.

One of the highlights is surprisingly the first single "Honey" with Mariah singing whole-heartedly on what is a chilled out R&B-Rap joint and the best part being those piano breaks heard after each few seconds. This song is also a collaboration with Sean "Puffy" Coombs (i.e. Puff Daddy or P. Diddy) and Q-Tip (from a Tribe Called Quest) so it couldn't really have gone wrong, especially with Mariah composing her own material as per usual. Another highlight artistically is the fantastic "The Roof", which you have to hear to appreciate its beauty. It combines light strings and breathy vocals (with help from Kelly Price) with an ingenious sample of Mobb Deep's heavy bass line from "Shook Ones". I refute anyone who does not believe this is a fantastic R&B classic. Other great tracks include "Butterfly", "Babydoll" and the dreamy "Close My Eyes".

The album's highlights could not all be emphasised enough in one review in fact, for once they outweigh the "bad parts" of the album - of which there are very few. What I will say is whether you loved or hated Mariah Carey's music before this album you will appreciate it for the masterwork it is and Mariah for writing almost every lyric on the album single-handedly. No record collection is complete without it...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An *A* Class R'n'B album from one hell of a vocalist!
This CD is where Mariah Carey lost a lot of her fans! The dreaded music faux pas; the transition from Pop/Mainstream to Hip-Hop/R'n'B! Most artists when attempting this will fall flat bang on their mainstream face, but, Mariah Carey has surpassed herself, presenting almost a cracking debut in itself, a new album in a new style from a happy and sexy, recently divorced woman!

Expecting a full blown heart touching ballad to begin the album would leave you shocked when a banging Hip-Hop tune thumps into play. "Honey" the first single taken from this album went straight to number one as most of hers had done in previous years. It's slick, with a classy array of artists, including P. Diddy, Bone Thug's and Harmony, Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri. Other guests who contributed to the album non-vocally include Prince and Missy Elliot. My own love of R'n'B came from this album because it showcases so many different musical influences that she had suppressed because of Sony Music and it's heavy hand.

For those who picked Mariah up at this stage in her career, will love the tracks on this album, aswell as those on the two following albums Rainbow and Glitter.
For those expecting the ballads, there are plenty here for them to feast on, and some special little surprises along the way including a certain diamond of a track called "The Beautiful One's". Those who love Mariah simply for the Ferrari of a voice she has boxed up in her throat will find her vocals impressively strong on many of the tracks, along with her angelic and heart felt empathy that go together with these beautiful songs just as Adam and Eve went together.

I could rave about this album for ever, because it simply is pure gold (or platinum, if you care to keep with the hip-hop times)! If you're on the market for a credible R'n'B album then you should snap this one up right away and forget the emotional troubles frenzy that have surrounded Mariah Carey of late and let this album that oozes a sumptuous quality I haven't been able to find since, sweep you away on a stream of "Honey"!
