Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Her best album to date....
This really is an OUTSTANDING ALBUM and her best effort to date.Through wonderfully written power ballads like "Outside" and "Whenever you call" to the better known "My All" and "Butterfly" this really is a collection of her best sounding songs to date. The album tends to be slow tempo throughout with exceptions like the infectious R&B tune "Honey".Highlights include the introspective "Close My Eyes" and the slick "BabyDoll" amazing production(of which she is responsible), fantastic vocals and heartfelt songs throughtout make this one of the best albums from a female artist- EVER.And the standout album from the already great Mariah Carey Catalogue.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - 3 stars (and a half)...
Mariah Carey, critically mauled pop balladeer (1990-1996) was finally put to rest on this 1997 offering. On Butterfly, she morphs into street-soul/hip-hop artist (with a little help from her friends). Here is a track-by-track breakdown: HONEY the first single, sent shocks through the industry. Utilising Puffy's production (while at the peak of his marketing powers) works well on this classy hip-soul attempt - 3.5/5 BUTTERFLY sees Mariah revert to the tried and tested ballad, however, less poppy beats than before are used - 3.5/5 MY ALL repeats the same formula of the previous track, with added spanish guitar. A precursor for 1999's After Tonight - 3/5 THE ROOF is a highlight, over-powering Honey for class, sex and melody - 5/5 THE FOURTH OF JULY is an awful, tuneless, mish-mash of a song. No real hook or melody, and awful lyrics - 1/5 BREAKDOWN: another hip-hop inspired track with Krayzie and Wish Bone. Good tune, hook and rap - 3.5/5 BABYDOLL, a collaboration with Missy Elliott is an over sweet, sickly hip-hop ballad a la Fourth of July - 1/5 CLOSE MY EYES and WHENEVER YOU CALL see her return to the ballad fold, in surprisingly spectacular fashion. The former is very well written lyrically, the latter melodically - 4/5 FLY AWAY (BUTTERFLY REPRISE) A pointless house/gospel remix by David Morales, which only detracts from the original - 1/5 THE BEAUTIFUL ONES, a cover of the 1984 Price track is the album's standout. Mariah and Sisqo shine when the epic lets rip in the fourth minute. An vast improvement on the original - 5+/5 OUTSIDE should really have closed the album. A simple soul ballad, Macy would be proud of - 4/5 HONEY (Remixes) - Pointless, tacky fillers - 1/5 Overall, a mixed bag, but The Beautiful Ones and The Roof sway it in favour. Her best album; if you want one buy it, not the abysmal follow-up, Rainbow.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A seamless emergence from balladier to butterfly.
Butterfly communicates the technical refinement of 1995's Daydream, and the true, undisguised soul of Mariah to deliver a masterclass in writing/composition and production. Her passion for hip hop, first shown in her remixes, is let loose on the mezmorising "Breakdown", which for the first time is allowed to socialize with the ballad perfection of "My All", and heartfelt expressionate insight in "Outside". The track which introduced the Butterfly to the world, "Honey", explores the 7 octave range indicative of the greatest voice to have graced the earth. Sacrificing commercial acception and success for the chance to produce music she loves and lives for, is what fuels the passion for this mastery of musical and autobiographical fusion.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This is the best mariah album eva!
I am only 14 and I was a late starter in mariah's music. This was the 1st album of hers that I bought and I must say I think it is sensational. I originally bought it 2 hear "My all" but when I listened 2 it I loved all the other songs esp. the duet with brian McKnight "Beautiful Ones". Their voices work really well 2gether. I bought it in August 1998 while I was on holiday in Zimbabwe, Africa and her voice made me appreciate my holiday experience a lot more.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mariah's Best album
When i first got this in 1997 when it came out i brought it for the ballads, 'My all' and 'Butterfly' but ever since i love it for all the other tracks that wern't released as singles such as 'Close my eyes' and the supercool 'babydoll' which should have been a single and i think is one of Mariah's favourites off the album. It also has great r'n'b tracks like 'the roof' and 'breakdown' and Honey is also a funky tune to dance to. This album gets better with repeated listening as it has alot of surprises and is not another Mariah ballad album. Mariah's albums get better each time but this i think supasses 'rainbow'
