This album contains some of the finest d+b ever - perfectly mixed, well-spaced, mental aggressive breaks which are intelligently cut up and dealt with, really minimal, expert use of synths, samples and bass. It works really well. Like only the best d+b, you will want to be up dancing and sat listening at the same time.
However he asks a bit much of us with 'Aleph 1' - the separate melody, bass and drum tracks all seem out of phase. I like that kind of stuff but this one is a bit too difficult for me.
He loses the plot with '124', and descends into some other random style of music which is not good at all, lame slow beats, american-sounding.
'Form and Function' contains some similar (if a little harder) d+b, and some lame remixes. If you like REALLY intelligent d+b, then you will like both CDs. Modus Operandi is my favourite; better produced and more direction. 'Form and Function' sounds like a much earlier release.
Anyone who likes this should try Kamikaze by Icarus, one of the most under-rated d+b LPs of all time; in the same vein, maybe with a little less finesse but a bit more manic. All good.

I first heard some of the tracks on this album on different soundtracks of films the titles of which I forget, the music I heard reminded me of 70’s ambient master “Eno” but with bigger beats and vintage keyboard sounds.
This is the kind of album I like to put on when I don’t want to hear vocals and just beats are the order of the day. The best example of this is the title track "Modus Oerandi"
In a strange way the music reminds me of another instrumental artist of the 70’s “Jean Michelle Jarre”, but “Photek has added bigger bass and drum sounds to beef up his ideas which are not dissimilar in my option to the afore mentioned performers.
So if you want soundscapes with big beats give this album a try, it may take a few listens but the extra work is worth it in the end…

this album is quite simply the greatest drum n bass album to ever have been made. it is, as the title suggests,absolutely the way it is done. cerebral, deftly handled and infinitely considered, this piece executes the theory of minimalism within the genre with superior sensitivity.
if you only own 1 drum n bass album this should be it. there has been nothing released since, even his own work which touches it. i cannot recommend it enough.

One of the most inventive and exciting drum programmers I've heard. The rest of the music though is often weak - thin ideas spun out for far too long. If you can get off on beats alone this is for you.

When I picked this up in HMV as a new release some years ago, I can't have readied myself to appreciate its caustic rythms. I was a ganja kru man, progressions didn't hadn't yet rocked my boat and I couldn't handle dnb sitting down; but I was simply a divver, this is seminal, superb. I have rediscovered it's greatness, it flows superbly; and like anything somewhat irregular, the more you understand what is to come, the more you appreciate the things you never noticed before. Buy and be merry.
