- Where's Burt and Hal When You Need Them?
Dionne Warwick was perhaps the most successful female pop singer in the 60's, but as the 70's came and went, so did the hits. She had a #1 hit with The Spinners "Then Came You", but that's about it, until 1979's two-time Grammy Award winning album "Dionne". Despite of winning two Grammy awards, the album wasn't actually terribly good, with the exception of the gorgeous ballad "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and the contemporary "Deja Vu". After that album, she continued to release albums consisting of middle-of-the-road material, and none of her singles were huge successes, except for the Barry Gibb produced "Heartbreaker" and the charity single "That's What Friends Are For". Dionne was in good voice throughout those years, but the material was just too blasé, and nothing much stood out. One song that did stand out was "Yours", a beautiful ballad, and perhaps her most affective. Another memorable song was her duet with Johnny Mathis "Friends in Love", but that's not even included on this release. When all is said and done, this collection is a good representation of that period, even though much of the material is painfully avarage.
Highlights: "I'll Never Love This Way Again", "Yours", "Heartbreaker" and "Deja Vu."

A good single disc of Dionne Warwick hits on the Arista label mainly from the 1980s when she had a career revival when she was produced by Luther Vandross,Barry Manilow and Barry Gibb among others. Dionne sounds great on all tracks and this is a good introduction disc for those who only know Dionne from her sixties hits. Some may be prefer the budget 3 disc "Legends" which features most of the tracks on this disc plus about 30 other tracks from the same era. In fact some of the non hit album tracks on "Legends" are better than the songs released as singles.
