Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Kein Wilkommen Hier
This CD wasn't so much released as it escaped. It has to be the worst recording of the songs from both the show and the film that I have ever heard.

Judi Dench does her usual professional job on her songs, believable, quirky and full of character. However, Jonathan Pryce seems to have no idea of what the MC is about at all. His German accent has been acquired from the "Accents R Us" bargain basket, and he presents none of the menace and joy that are present in the MC's songs. Maria Friedmann is simply winsome in Sally's character songs, though she does work to put across the Englishness of Isherwood's Sally in the Kit Kat Klub songs.

The orchestra is simply too big and cannot give the feel of a theatre show, plus the accoustic in which the recording was made is far too cavernous completely killing the feeling of intimacy or claustrophobia that this show needs.

A real Stinker!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - At last a complete"ensemble" Cabaret
Whilst no recording will ever erase Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles,it has to be admitted that her sheer talent and personality did rather overwhelm the film version.
This "ensemble" recording rectifies that.
Maria Friedmann & Greg Edelmann in the lead bring a humanity and reality to their roles, something slightly lacking in the film. The MC is the marvellous Johnathan Pryce, who manages to convey jollity with an underlying sinister air.Add to this Fraulein Schneider sung by Judi Dench, who herself played Sally Bowles on the London stage in 1968.
This 2 CD set also includes music from the 1987 Broadway revival, and several tracks written for the film version, but not in the original stage show.
If you want a balanced, musical and enlivening version,go for this one!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A modern masterpiece
While I have to admit that i prefer older musicals where the people burst out into song for no reason, this soundtrack was the one that launched me into the more modern musical.
All of the songs possess a quality that doesn't make them sound childish, the best of these being 'Maybe This Time' and the title track.
A thoroughly modern musical with a suitable hint of sadness.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Liza May Minnelli
By all means this happens to be one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Liza Minnelli does such a convincing job as the fraülein Sally Bowles, she's energic, forceful and ravingly wonderful. This sound is just great and it's not just Liza it's the whole cast, Joel Grey does a wonderful job and it also earned him an oscar for best supporting actor, he's so great escpecially on "Willkommen" and "If You Could See Her". The last song mentioned is perticulary wonderful, it's such a "tragic" love story with a deeper meaning behind it [for the dumb ones, it's about a german who falls in love with a jew].
Liza Minnelli is outstanding her overall performance is legendary songs such as "Mein Herr [my favourite Liza Minnelli song]", "Maybe This Time" and on the immortal "Cabaret". The movie was one of the best I've ever seen, and the soundtrack is just as ravishing, by all means one of the best Pictures/soundtracks ever created. Hail Liza May Minnelli.

2. Best Soundtrack
3. Best Art Direction

5. Best Director [Bob Fosse]

Can you belivie that 8 Oscars.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A masterpiece
Speaking as a person who didnt used to like musicals until I saw this film and the latest Chicago release, I'm hooked. Like other reviews, it's Liza that shines through, singing to perfection with a strength of voice that blows you back. Good songs on the album include my favourite 'Money, Money' and the ever famous 'Cabaret'. The songs are in the same orderas they were in the film, which does mean that when you're listening to the soundtrack that not only can you follow the story in your head but there are nice contrasts in tone and mood, especially where the refreshingly traditional 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me' is concerned.
If you liked the film, you'll love the soundtrack and the voice combination of Joel Grey (the master of ceremonies who appears in most of the songs on the album) and Liza is perfect when you listen to the differences in their tones and power of volume.
The album is thought-provoking, reflective, eccentric at times, funny at times, chilled in some songs and crazy and exciting in others, it paints a mental image of the era in which the film is set, and above all its an enjoyable soundtrack and one you can pick up and listen to a few tracks of without having to commit yourself to it.
