Music : Lovely Thunder

I'm not really sure where Lovely Thunder ranks among Budd's other works. There's no denying the brilliance of The White Arcades or even the classics he did with Brian Eno (The Pearl & The Plateaux Of Mirror). Thunder ranks near the top simply for containing elements of those releases.
So powerful is "The Gunfighter" that it could have been used in any Sergio Leone film. I can see Clint Eastwood clamp down on his cigar everytime i listen to it. Budd shifts gears in dramatic fashion. Forcing you to feel the heat and isolation of "Sandtreader". Driving you into your sweltering introversion. "Ice Floes In Eden" plays like a cold sweat. Thunder claps of tension filled withdrawl, enhanced with the definitive drama of a syringe hanging from a junkies arm.
If anything, Lovely Thunder would have to be considered Harold Budd's comercial inspired ambience. Containing everything but a music video for MTV. Thunder is about as close as Budd ever came to being considered pop friendly. This is a must have release. Even if you're a casual fan, you'll enjoy Budd's graphic visuals.

One of my first experiences of ambient music was Flowered Knife Shadows, which is on this album. I was lying on my bed, eyes closed, lights out, relaxing in quietude. Then that track began. Where that track took me was a rare and unique experience. I fear I may have aroused expectation by my comments and disturbed the depth of relaxation one might have achieved in anticiption of that track, so please forget I said anything at all and buy this album if chilling out completely is your thing.

Regular viewers will know what to expect from a Harold Budd release and Lovely Thunder compares well with his previous and subsequent output. It is, however, slightly less focused than usual and stylistically it leaps from his hazy piano pieces to drifting strings and melodic drones more than other LPs. Still highly worthwhile owning and a great introduction to his work.
Rating: - Surreal, sublime: music that resonates within the soul.
'Lovely Thunder' is arguably Harold Budd's supreme masterpiece. It is a synthesis of slow, melancholic sounds that resonate within the soul.
I could play this music repeatedly forever. In fact I sometimes wonder if the sounds were not born from the very spaces that exist before and after life.
Rarely can such perfection of flow be sustained in ambient music. Here there is an almost hypnotic lingering of tones, broken at times by atmospheric thunder and desolate sparseness.
But it is music of the surreal and the sublime. Gentle and relaxing, its mood is rarely in any hurry.
Probably the CD to take with you in solitary confinement on your desert island.
