Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A classic live album
I never was a great fan of Whitesnake's studio output but this live recording is something else! My vinyl copy of this was worn out from endless playing many years ago so I was very happy to pick up a CD copy of the album. Although the years have passed the music has lost none of it's appeal and once again I am playing it to death!

So what sets this apart from Whitesnake's studio recordings? For me it is the incredible intensity and power of the music. Coverdale's voice has always been strong and combined with the rawer guitar sound of the live recording it somehow seems to grow in emotional intensity.

The album has an authentic Blues feel to it and in my mind there really is not a weak track. 'Fool for your loving' is given a new lease of life by freeing it from the over-production of the single. 'Walking in the shadow of the blues' showcases the guitar work of Marsden & Moody to incredible effect where as 'Ain't no love in the heart of the city' brings out a softer sound, but no less invirogating.

All told this is a fantastic album that is well worth a listen.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Whitesnake at it's best............
I had the priviledge recently of seeing Whitesnake live at Hammersmith two days ago, 26 years after this was recorded and David Coverdale can still hit a note. This album, however, captures the classic line-up in top form. There is, in my mind, not a weak song.

This is blues-rock at it's finest!! And a high point has to be Ain't Gonna Cry No More.

Brilliant.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - simply stunning
This compilation of live music is fantastic, a credit to whitesnake and true rock, especially the last few tracks, they are awesome, there is no other words to describe it. An excellent buy for true rock fans.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - 'Ere's a song for yer!!
Way back in the early 80's, I was given this album on vinyl, (thanks Fiona) ... the grooves wore out long long ago... Coverdale,Moody,Marsden et al at their best. The slide guitar work is legendary and is still as good live today in Company of Snakes. Lovehunter and Mistreated are just magnificent. Play it loud...with little or no lights on...drink in hand and let the chords, riffs and Coverdale's voice send you to that place that few rock bands can do today...Sweet Satisfaction!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An enjoyable rock n' roll workout
These fine live recordings feature the original Whitesnake line-up playing the Hammersmith Odeon in November 1978 and on two dates in June 1980.
The sound is good, although it may not quite live up to an audiophile's dream, but then again it's not a new album.

On "Live...In The Heart Of The City", Whitesnake play some great, often blues-tinted hard rock, held together by Deep Purple's Jon Lord and Ian Paice. And they go through some of the best songs from their first albums:
The heavy "Sweet Talker", which opens with a superb dual guitar riff, the groovy, swaggering blues-rock workouts "Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues", "Ready An' Willing" and "Love Hunter", the catchy radio staple "Fool For Your Loving", the acoustic, Led Zeppelin-influenced ballad "Ain't Gonna Cry No More", and the soulful Bobby 'Blue' Bland classic "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City".

Furthermore, the band also perform two Deep Purple songs from the David Coverdale era, a fine "Might Just Take Your Life" and a magnificent eleven-minute rendition of "Mistreated".

The music is less flashy, perhaps, than the latter-day versions of Whitesnake featuring hair metal guitarists Adrian Vandenbergh and Steve Vai, but the two excellent rock n' roll guitarists Bernie Marsden and Mickey Moody play superb, interlocking guitar riffs and fiery solos (not least Moody's extended slide guitar solo), and the rhythm section of Lord, Paice and bassist Neil Murray is rock-steady. And then there's Coverdale, of course.

If you like early Whitesnake, or just hard, blues-n-boogie rock n' roll in general, I can't see why you wouldn't enjoy this great live album as well. It's a prime example of Whitesnake at their best and grooviest.
