Ry Cooder has many influences - from the early days as part of Taj Mahal's backing group (Ryland P Cooder, Rhythm Guitar) to the global success of Buena Vista Social Club. This collection pre-dates the latter and post-dates the former - a rather strange bracketing, that has more to do with label allegiance than completeness.
Nontheless, if you know Ryland only as a musical archaeologist, this is a great introduction to his enormous talent. Missing (in my view), are some great songs, such as 634-5789 and Across the Borderline - not to mention the classic Coast of Malabar (with the Chieftains). Still, there's enough here to whet your appetite for more - and it's almost impossible to keep up with his output. He'll have a very comfortable and well deserved retirement on all those royalties.
