My first experience of this type of music was back in the two tone days of Madness, Specials, Beat, Selecter, Bad Manners and Bodysnatchers. At the time I was simply blown away with the sheer energy and passion the music created. There was also a terrific dress code to accompany this new style. Two-Tone was born. Its now a household name for those years, but meekly began as a low budget record label by Jerry Dammers ( keyboard player with The Specials). Many of the songs were in fact covers of earlier "reggae/ska/rocksteady" tunes from the 60s and early 70s.
What this album does magnificently is blend the power and agression of the two tone years with the original recordings of the aerlier years. Every single track on this album is a gem.
If you are into this music in a big way, then you will know what I mean.
If you are looking for a snapshot album to get a "best of 60s/70s/80s ska" then this most certainly is it.
I already had 90% of the songs on it on vinyl, but snapped up this little beauty on its release.
If you like it - which you will !, you'll be glad to know there's a whole load more classics that arent on this album.
Check out the new compilation "Young, Gifted and Black" as this has some terrific stuff on it too.
