Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Legend Continues ..... Volume 6
This one was released at the end of 1971, and just missed the No 1 album slot.

It opens with 'I'm Still Waiting' from Diana Ross, a British No 1. When I hear it start, I can still feel my sun-burned back from that August. This was the start of Diana Ross becoming more popular here than in her native US. When they released it there, it stalled at #63 pop and #40 R&B. She also has another big hit on here 'Remember Me'. Her old group The Supremes were still doing well in the UK. Their exciting three part harmony lead on 'Nathan Jones' made our top 5, and I'm sorry , but to my ears it knocks spots off Bananarama's weedy cover. The girls also teamed up with The Four Tops for a fun but worthy verson of 'River Deep Mountain High'.

The Four Tops hit No 3 in their own right with 'Simple Game', a song written and produced here for them by The Moody Blues. Levi is on top form and shows his skill in handling the different style song.

As well as the above Ross and Tops numbers, there are others on here that were British hits in 1971, but not in the US. Northern Soul DJs were always on the look out for obscure stompers. The old 60s Motown sound certainly fitted the bill from their style, but most of the stuff was too well known. 'Heaven Must Have Sent You' by The Elgins was an exception, the song had failed in 1966 on both sides of the pond, so it was rare. When the Northern DJs picked it up and started playing it, Tamla Motown in London re-released it. The song became popular, garnering airplay and sales. Those Northern DJs dropped it like a hot brick, but the record took off and got To No 3. The same happened with The Velvelettes' 'These Things Will Keep Me Loving You', although that one was not such a biggie.

The Jackson 5 were stalling a little chart wise in the UK, but here is the original of 'Never Can Say Goodbye' Michael does a great job on the song. This was years before Gloria Gaynor made it an early Disco anthem, and over a decade before Jimmy Sommerville made it a gay anthem.

Eddie Kendricks' seering beautiful falsetto is used to great effect on The Tempt's 'Just My Imagination'. Which of us did not live this record in clumsy adolescence? Their harmonies on this and 'It's Summer' bring a smile to my heart.

In failing to hit No 1, this volume is just past the peak of the Chartbuster series, but the hits were still coming. Those that were hits just in Britain, hold a special place in my memory and my heart.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Volume 6 of 12 looks at 1971
1971 was a very good year for Motown in the UK. Diana Ross had three UK top ten hits including a number one (I'm still waiting - the opening track here) as well as Surrender (on volume 7) and Remember me (included here). Diana's former group, the Supremes, also did well, scoring top ten hits with Stoned love (on volume 5), and Nathan Jones. The Supremes also came close when they teamed up with the Four Tops on River deep, mountain high, a cover of the Ike and Tina Turner classic. The Four Tops (without the Supremes) had a UK top three hit with Simple game but their other 1971 release (Just seven numbers can straighten out my life) was only a minor UK hit.

The Temptations made the UK top ten with Just my imagination running away with me, though they failed to chart with It's summer. R Dean Taylor hid his biggest ever UK hit with Indiana wants me, which made number two. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles had two UK hits in 1971 (I don't blame you at all, Come round here I'm the one you need), both included here. Neither made the UK top ten but both came close. The Elgins had a UK top three hit with Heaven must have sent you, but were generally unsuccessful in the UK, having only one other (minor) UK hit to their credit. The two Jackson 5 tracks and the tracks by Stevie Wonder (a brilliant cover of a Beatles classic) and the Velvelettes were only minor UK hits.

This is a great compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from 1971. Although Motown had plenty of big hits after 1971, stiffer competition from rival record labels ensured that Motown never had such consistent success again.
