Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Summer Vibes
Having bought this CD from just purely the reviews it received from the music media, I was mightly impressed. As soon as the intro for 'Since I Left You' kicks in you can tell that you are in for a treat, this is then quickly followed by the booming bass of Madonna's 'Holiday' which leads into the second track (Stay Another Season). The first five tracks are pure class and really give you them 'Summer Vibes'.

However it is from here on in that the album does show signs of weaknesses. The mixing is very poor probably down to the choice of samples as they don't seem to fit in nicely with one another. Quite frankly it seems they have visited a car boot sale and picked up a box of old vinyl and thought let's see if we can make an LP out of all of these. If they have and that was their aim they have done a fantastic job as the album does grow on you rapidly.

Secondly the album on the whole is a bit too long and they could have done with cutting out tracks 7 to 11 but it's not until track 13 (Frontier Psychiatrist) that the album starts to get into full swing again. Using a sample from Dexter's Lab (the film not the cartoon) which swiftly moves into the score from the film 'Laurence of Arabia'. This is then followed by sample after sample which oddly enough could be called 'lyrics'. It is from this point that the album starts to build up a head of steam and finishes with a rousing finale, with ETOH(14), A Little Journey(16), and Extra Kings(18) with the latter track sampling The Osmonds.

Some would say that the group of Antipodeans that make up The Avalanches have been very cheeky in using so many samples (just take a look at the sleeve notes). However upon reflection the whole record is cleverly put together depsite the poor mixing. This album is definitely an early contender for Album of the year and will go on to be the Soundtrack for the summer of 2001.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - How good is this album?!!
I basically bought this on a hunch from the reviews I read in the usual music mags. I'd heard the single 'Since I left you', which I thought was pretty decent, and on listening to the album over and over since it came out, this is just one of the gems on a fantastic album. At times it's like fiddling with the knob on an old radio, searching the stations, with every one of them churning out beautiful songs, but with that added bit of funk. It's chilled dance music, which is adaptable for so many scenarios, revising for those oh so difficult exams, a warm up for a night out, or a warm down after a night out. THIS IS THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Don't believe the hype
I bought this album having read euolgies about its danceabilty and its amazing originality. Well, I totally disagree with these assessments.

The album is wholly unoriginal, being just a mish-mash of 70s and 80s samples thrown together with little apparent concern as to how they will gel together. The samples chosen are at times astonishing in their ability to irritate - for goodness sake, Kid Creole and the Coconuts always made you want to reach for the 'off' button, not to get up and dance.

This is lazy music. But, that's not my objection. My objection is that it is bad lazy music. This is a wholly over-rated, uninspiring racket.

Don't get hoodwinked by the crowd. Buy the new Daft Punk album instead!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome
What an album! It amazes me every time I listen to it. The amonut of time and effort invested in constructing an album entirely from samples must have been enormous. But it's paid off. This has to be one of the all time classic dance albums and no party will ever be complete without at least one play of this.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Totally overrated debut album
I really can not see what all the fuss is about. 6 guys from Australia mix up their record collections into one long stream of beats, vocals and spoken word. So we know what they've done, but what does it sound like? Awful, that's what. If you're tempted to buy this on the strength of the title track, forget it. Since I Left You is the only real 'song' on the entire album. The rest is a mix of samples and beats that just cut around far too much leaving you itching for the album to finish. Don't believe the hype!
