Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Jolly good show, chaps!
The chaps at Lake Records have done it again and are to be applauded for a job well done.
This collection of twenty-five musical gems includes all but two of the recordings made by the Temperance Seven between 1962 and 1965.
A jolly good collection it is, too!
It opens with a hitherto unreleased offering by the Carnation Quartet wherein the dulcet tones of Whispering Paul McDowell serve as a gentle introduction to the musical feast which follows.
Although there were several changes of personnel since its initial rise to prominence in those far-off halcyon days, musical standards did not deteriorate one jot, with many arrangements reminiscent of the early Duke Ellington Orchestra and other renowned musical assemblages and one has to say that the inclusion of several unfamiliar items only serves to add to one's enjoyment of the proceedings.
The accompanying notes are most informative, being the work of the versatile John Gieves-Watson whose expertise on the banjo and spoons is amply demonstrated throughout the programme therein presented.
Essential listening - Happy days!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - After the hits dried up
Twenties revivalists the Temperance Seven, with George Martin as producer, had a very successful year in 1961, having a UK number one hit (You're driving me crazy), another UK top five hit (Pasadena) and two minor UK hits. This represents their entire chart history - they had no hits before or after 1961. Those hits can all be found on the companion volume to this compilation, which I reviewed some time ago. This compilation focuses on their music from 1962 although it includes one (previously un-released) recording from 1961, Dreamaway romance.

The group remained active as a live act for many years despite the absence of further hits. As this collection, the line-up continued to change but the style didn't. It is generally upbeat, bouncy music including covers of The mooche (Duke Ellington), Bye bye baby (Fats Waller), Ain't she sweet (Ben Bernie), China boy (Paul Whiteman), Brown eyes why are you blue (Nick Lucas), I want to be happy (Carl Fenton), two versions of Sugar (Ethel Waters), Clap hands here comes Charley (Johnny Marvin), My sweetie went away (Billy Murray and Ed Smalle), Ukelele lady (Vaughn Deleath) and You took advantage of me (Paul Whiteman). You've not heard the original artists? Don't worry - most are hard to find (if not impossible) though you should be able to find a collection of Paul Whiteman's music somewhere - he was one of the biggest stars of the twenties and thirties.

The best-known track here is probably Alexander's record breaking band - actually an instrumental cover of Alexander's ragtime band. Originally written by Irving Berlin, it was a major American hit in 1911 for two different acts and in 1912 for two more. It has since become a standard and returned to the top of the American charts in 1938 via Bing Crosby and Connee Boswell's duet version.

As the Beatles began to dominate popular music, the Temperance Seven suffered a double blow - first because the popularity of their own music declined (although the Migil 5 and the New Vaudeville Band both enjoyed success as revivalists later in the sixties) and second because their producer also happened to be the producer for the Beatles, so he wasn't able to devote much time to the Temperance Seven.

If you already have the companion volume with all the hits on it, this will provide you with more music in a similar style and equal quality. If you haven't got either volume but you enjoy the music of the twenties, buy the other volume first or (better still) buy both together. There wasn't any other group in the sixties quite like them, even including the ones I mentioned earlier.
