Music : Wingspan: Hits and History [VINYL]

Okay - you have three choices: the clarity of the CD, the authenticity and notsalgia of vinyl, or the in-car convenience of the cassette. My advice - take the vinyl!
Musically, I am sure we're all aware of Paul's reputation as a songwriter and performer so, if you like at least one Macca song, this album will not disappoint. The majority of his top 10 hits are here, alongside some great songs that never saw release as a single - namely the classic "Maybe I'm Amazed".
But why get it on vinyl? For a start, you may pay that little bit extra, but you'll have on your hands something that will most likely increase in value due to its limited pressings. Secondly - this is one monster of an album (2½ hours of solid McCartney) and I certainly found that splitting it into 8 digestable chunks was certainly more palatable. Finally, all the songs are digitally re-mastered and pressed onto decent quality vinyl (not the heavy and rigid 160g stuff, but a good alternative) so you have the benefit of both clarity and nostalgia.
So, in summary, "Wingspan" is a flawless collection of fine songs presented in a way that's great for collectors and a treat for fans.

This compilation perfectly summons up the musical history of a man who has influenced many. Although the contents of this album doesn't stick to Wings material only, and despite the fact that fans would have no doubt welcomed some outtake or rarity, it's always good to hear these songs. A time will come when the music that McCartney has written post-Beatles will be looked upon for what it really is: some bad, a lot of good tunes, and some masterpieces. I just wish he never stops.

In retrospect, Wings were a pretty rockin' little outfit.
They certainly struggled at first (the UK college tours), hit their stride & got lost in the mania a bit (Band On The Run & Venus and Mars), and then petered out, though not before releasing a couple of platters that would've made anyone proud (London Town & Back To The Egg). This set may not contain my choices of Wings' best, but it does make the case that McCartney & crew could hang with the best of them. Perhaps even his then-hogoblin The Beatles.
The History section is particularly tasty, though it would've been nice to stick to proper Wings material. There certainly was enough.
All and all enjoyable and a little eye-opening if you dismissed them back in the 70's. And you can probably still pick up the original LPs in the used record bin for $1 each.
