Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - amazing hybrid metal going in a million directions all at once
released in 2001,XX is a compilation of the bands first three albums that are nigh on impossible to get so this is a greatest hits of such but also represents mushroomheads first international release.
The band are hard to define as hey mix metal with punk, hip hop at times, industrial and alternative metal, they were compared to slipknot as they wore masks but the truth is that mushroomhead were around before slipknot and they dont really sound like iowas finest.XX is an album that is unpredictable but yet never loses focus, album opener before i die is stunning, taking the listener on a journey to insanity and then back, the dual vocals compliment each other perfectly, they both bring different levels of intensity and kookiness at the same time, bwomp follows and thats a crazy song as it doesnt follow a formula but why should it,some say mushroomhead are similar to faith no more,i say that they have the madness of fnm but they are alot more metal and in your face so i dont go with that theory, other stunning songs on here include these filthy hands, never let it go,the new cult king and the wrist. This is an album that many have failed to understand,an album that refuses to walk in a certain direction, but yet has all the variety you will ever want in heavy music!enchanting stuff

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mushroomhead vs Slipknot
My main reason for writing a review is to stop the rubbish about Slipknot copying Mushroomhead or Mushroomhead copying slipknot.
They have very different styles and both have plus and minus points over each other.
It is true Mushroomhead were out first, but it is equally true that Slipknot probably didn't know anything about Mushroomhead when they broke into the scene...and hence never stole a look, mask or style.
I greatly enjoy both bands music and would call myself a true fan of both. Saying that if you like one band then you can't like the other is just utter rubbish. This rivalry isn't between the bands, it's between the fans just for the record. In fact if you research properly you'll find that the two bands actually get on very well; a prime example of this being Corey(8) calling the Mushroomhead boys when Slipknot visited Cleveland. Hopefully I've put some misconceptions to rest.

Back to the album, XX (Double X), it's a rough and ready metal album full of melody, beat and thrash. A combination that can only work if you've got 6 great musicians and two truely awesome vocallists; both attributes Mushroomhead poses.

All tracks are excellent in their own distinctive way, but tracks of particular note are Bwomp, Never Let It Go, Born of Desire and 43.

If only this album were as polished as the second it would surely be one of the best metal albums in history.

BUY IT - the style and quality need to be heard to be believed!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - How can you describe in 1 word better than Perfect?
Well I suggest XX is a new meaning for beyond brilliant.

YeS Mushroomhead Cleavlands masked men on top form with this album.

There music is totally unique, there lyrics are there own, & there style was also unique...until 1995 when SLipknot emerged claiming Mushroomhead were the ****** copies. But as any1 who cares to look @ the facts will know Mushroomhead emerged in there own right back in 1993-those orange jumpsuits of SLipknots-hmmm ghuess who wore thoise first-its true.

ANyway back to the album-a truely great mix of songs-wonderful rap metal skills from J.mann as shown to there full potential in Bwomp-(track 2) & track 5 Mann & Nothing complementing each others voices perfectly in "Never Let It Go" possibly the best track on the album.

ANd the musicians aint all that bad either!!!

A truely awsome album..or a truly XX album. If your a Slipknot fan you won't like this album because there musical styles share practically no simularities.

Rating-10/10. Best Tracks Bwomp & Never Let It Go. Don't hesitate jus buy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant... That's All I Have to Say
I was a little skeptical when I picked up "XX" by Mushroomhead. Mainly, because I had never heard anything by them and the way the band looked lead me to believe that they were going to be another Slipknot. Still, something intrigued me about them, so I picked up the album. I'm happy to say that these guys sound NOTHING like Slipknot. The two bands sound nothing a like. Don't let the costumes fool you, as that's the only similarity that I see between the two (reports are that Mushroomhead has been doing this for a few years now, so it's not like they decided to dress up in masks and overalls all the sudden). When you listen to Mushroomhead, you are presented with a very melodic industrial/metal band that is unlike anything you have ever heard.

It's amazing how unique these guys are. I have listened to a lot of bands, and I have NEVER come across anything like these guys. All of their songs have many different layers to them instead of just following the same tired formula. Each song is a living and breathing thing that has a look and feel of its own. And while being very melodic, these guys are great at being extremely dark, as well.

What really stands out the most is the keyboards. This was a brilliant move on their part. The keyboards really make the songs come together and give them their originality and haunting sound. The singing is great too. There's a combo of yelling, rapping and yelling (done by the two vocalists). The guitars and drums are also outstanding and really make the songs come alive.

The entire album is a great listen. There are certain songs that I listen to more than others, but this is really an album you can pop into your stereo without having to worry about always fumbling about with the track buttons. The ones that stand out the most to me are "before I die," "bwomp," "these filthy hands," "solitaire/unraveling," "never let it go," "chancre score," and "43." All in all, everything on this album is excellent.

Mushroomhead's "XX" is a complete success in my eyes. It's a very entertaining album that takes music to a different level. Comparisons will be made with Slipknot, but I assure you that the costumes are the only similarities you will encounter. This group has a sound of their own, and they do a great job of bringing it with full force. If you want to venture out and try something different, this might be the album for you.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Don't compare them to Slipknot
cleveland's Mushroomhead have been compared to Slipknot, purely because they wear masks. This is unfair, as Mushroomhead have what Slipknot lack: a sense of humour. Possibly. This album combines fantastic music with frankly bizarre singing and lyrics that suggest they might not be entirely serious. What else could explain a song title like 'Bwomp'? That said, it is an enjoyable album on the whole, particularly Solitaire Unraveling.
