Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Midwinter 4 CD Boxed Set
I agree with "Wylie" Stone (on amazon.com) that "not everything will suit" the listener's taste, but I stand by Nigel Schofield's right to place every track on this 4-CD set and I commend him for doing so.

This boxed set has an undeservedly, if understandably, low profile due to its specialised material and the capital outlay involved; yet I personally would have paid that amount for the first 6-8 tracks that sprang out from my first "skim" listening, let alone all the other gems. For me the older, sometimes raucous-sounding, source-related material does not rankle (as it might with those weaned on Steeleye's 'All Around My Hat', for example).

I already had some of the stuff by Peter Bellamy, the Coppers and the Watersons, but relish the tracks from this last group that I had not yet heard; the power generated, when that sibling harmony from Mike, Norma and the late Lal really hits, has yet to be replicated successfully

Pete Heyward reports that Nigel Schofield has "introduced an American flavour to this project", and I would normally skip those tracks which tend towards country; but, here, the opposite is true and some of these are among the most listenable.

My own preferred track is probably the cover of 'The River' by the Grace Notes female trio (although, unforgivably, I am unfamiliar with Joni Mitchell's original); but I also have a sneaking affection for 'First Snow on Brooklyn', whose maybe pretentious-sounding title hides a track which isn't. (No Tull fan, I, but this lacks the raucousness of JT's Solstice Bells, say, and shows how the vocal has mellowed.)

A word about the under-sung Artisan group from Yorks, who (partly because I've listened to them live, at close quarters) contribute the two tracks which, pound for pound, I've listened to most. The otherwise-excellent accompanying 138-page book is a little light on notes re- Artisan, possibly because they more-or-less went their separate ways at Xmas 2005.

(Now, if only this commendable music publisher would raid the Copper Family archive to the same level of excellence... :0)
