Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Troubled soul
I have just erased a glowing review of this album. I feel whatever talent Ms Winehouse had has been totally eclipsed by her problems. Her public appearances in the Summer of 08 have been miserably feeble affairs, or she has been pulling out of gigs at the last minute...the girl is a mess.

Seems since her other half went to jail she is disintegrating in a very public way.

Pull yourself together Amy, before it's too late.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Album in a Long Time . . .
. . . If not all time! This album reeks of energy, raw emotion and intimate knowledge of the genres with which she works. Intelligent, modern, adult lyrics that do not fear truth and pain, dazzle against wonderfully complex arrangements, brought to serpentine life by the drooling, throaty, fleshy tones of her voice. Dry smoke and brass collide here, making of the music something powerful, hip and magical.

As a music reviewer for Bent magazine, I see lots of singles and albums every day. None have been as good as this. Amy is the new Billie Holiday, without a doubt.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Dark Diva
Despite bearing the emotional scars and physical torments which have been well documented in the media. Fragile diva Ms Winehouse follows up the sparky, funky jazz of 'Frank' with a recording of rare quality and imagination.
Underlying the Winehouse sound is a solid 60's soul vibe which when drizzled with a soupcon of jazz, and R & B produces an album of passion and energy.
Narrative tracks drawn from life are injected with real soul and at times anger. Mess around with Amy and she'll come at you with waspish words wrapped up and packaged in an extraordinary voice.
Not a five star classic but a creation of quality and passion.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amy Returns With A Hard Edged 60s R+B Sound
After the impressive but occasionally meandering sound of her mellow jazzy influenced debut album 'Frank', Amy tightens up her songwriting somewhat on 'Back To Black', swaps jazz for a more muscular 60s style r+b sound and flexes her vocal delivery to reveal a much deeper and harder style of singing. In fact with 'Black To Black's occasional Phil Spector influenced sound it's very hard to believe Amy isn't black, the album has such a strong air of authenticity about it.
Actually, those jazzy vocal traits are still pretty much in evidence (if a lot deeper) through much of the album - it's the harder soul influenced backing which marks the greatest change.

Song for song 'Back In Black' is incredibly strong where at least six of the first seven songs could easily stand on their own as singles.'Rehab', 'You Know I'm No Good', 'Me And Mr Jones', 'Back In Black', 'Love Is A Losing Game' and 'Tears Dry On Their Own'(with a sample of motown) are both immediately accessible and also very substantial in terms of their strengths as songs with extremely effective arrangements and some wonderfully hard edged vocals mixed with some rare subtelty (particuarly for this day and age). 'Love Is A Losing Game' is a beautiful ballad given a very tender delivery by Amy which shows how effectively she can shift gears when the need arises.

The other tracks are what can commonly be described as growers. 'Just Friends', 'Wake Up Alone', 'Some Unholy War', 'He Can Only Hold Her' and 'Addicted' take a little more time to reveal their true strengths yet these songs are likely perhaps to create an equally strong impression over the long term. 'Some Unholy War' in particular has an incredibly authentic harsh black sound which adds so effectively to the richness of the sounds contained within this album.

Also, of course it's also worth noting the autobiographical nature of the lyrics - especially 'Rehab', 'You Know I'm No Good' and the title track 'Back To Black' which relate very strongly to Amy's recently publicised problems. It's often believed that it's the tortured souls which often makes the greatest music and while i don't wish Amy any ill fortune i think it's true to say some of those relevant lyrics add to making this album endlessly fascinating.

'Back In Black' also represents the greatness which can still be found in contemporary music today. One of its greatest strengths is it's not guided by the short term fads of the day.

In other words i think it has a great chance of remaining forever timeless.
