Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Dissapointing follow up, like a reunion attempt
This isn't going to win me a lot of votes but I am genuinely dissapointed with this album after Frank. We might expect some diversion, new direction but really even as a single piece this falls short. There's no question Amy has a fantastic tallent and yes, i really do like this style of music as well...it just feels a bit too contrived - her wonderful expressive skill is lost in neat and tidy, autoqueue read words that don't convey much of anything - relying on the quirky music to carry the formulated song along.

What is so great about Rehab - it's different and I guess you'd listen to it, and that it's perhaps a brave move rather than trying to recreate Frank but it just goes on and on, it's formulaic and catchy. I'd hope her next album went back to a more freer, personal style or moving on into something else! Best soul for years? because you put on a motown tune doesn't make it an achievement I'm afraid! Thje best soul has somthing behind it and I've seen Amy doing live sets where she excels, (I feel here like they've said please don't do what you normally do, read these words and don't change them or put it anything offensive) not in pre packaged studio sellers. I do feel perhaps the financial, commercial expectations or cash signs have more influence on this album, which creatively and musically as well as lyrically is not much to get excited about. If you are really interested in her music, don't be put off by this!, and everyone else, don't confuse nostalgia and mass appeal with creativity.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Olk Skool
The best soul album since 'I Am Shelby Lynne', (and don't say; 'but that's a country album!'), Amy's - quite literally - smoky vocals compliment this su[erb set of old school style three minute gems perfectly. Whoever decided that she should be pointed in this direction after 'Frank' has made an inspired decision - even though it would probably have seemed a risk to any record company exec, (who are of course notorious for playing it safe and wanting 'more of the same').

The songs are so good you could be forgiven for thinking that they are actually covers of old Motown classics, which I guess is probably the highest compliment you can pay them.

A modern classic.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantasmagorical!!!
I bought this album about 6 weeks ago and it is absolutely fantastic, it hasn't left my CD player since. It's one of those rare albums that's appropriate for any occassion; whether you're unwinding before you go to bed, waking yourself up in the morning, getting ready for a night out, as a soundtrack for an angry day or to have something to cry to. Upbeat and perky, Winehouse manages to combine soulful with raw grit, swinging between melancholy to unapologetic soul bearing to seemingly arrogant. 'Back to Black' demonstrates perfectly why she's one of the most successful ,unrivalled female artists in the UK today, definately scores higher than 'Frank'.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Incredible
WOW. Hardly room to criticise anything here at all. The girl's a natural singer, unique writer and plays the gee-tar too. She's obviously a royal, no, make that an imperial pain in the butt in real life but with a microphone she's a very large if idiosyncratic diamond. My disappointment is as an audiophile. The sound quality of the recording is pretty dismal with crackling vocals and less than 21st Century clarity. Shame as the production itself is inspired. Despite this gripe it's not an album I'll be leaving to gather dust. Title track stands out as one of my favourite tracks of the century so far. Too many naughty words in it for auntie Mabel but who gives a monkeys.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A classic by a true great of modern music.
What a terrific album. I don't know how hard the 'difficult second album' was for Ms.Winehouse, but she's certainly cracked it with this one. I look around at many of her comtemporaries and see just what an achievement this is, think the second albums served up by Franz Ferdinand, The Darkness and even The Kaiser Chiefs and how they fail to live up to their first praiseworthy offerings. But Ms.Winehouse has served up a cracker here, eclipsing her fellow chart mates. A succesion of greats with some real gems, of which 'Back To Black' is truly superb. A third and fourth album of equal quality and Amy will be one of this country's greatest ever.
