Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Solomon Burke goes south and adds to his credentials

An early, important and influent soul pioneer, Solomon Burke enjoyed many R&B hit singles for Atlantic in the sixties. His brand of soul included country influences and featured sophisticated arrangements. The Rolling Stones, i.e., acknowledged his stature by covering two of his greatest hits.

This CD is a straight reissue (plus detailed liner notes) of the first LP Burke completed after leaving Atlantic. Issued on Bell Records in 1969, it was recorded at Fame Studios with the Muscle Shoals house band (and help from Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn.)

The interplay between the front man and the other musicians is masterful. The sparer, southern musical backing confers more of a bluesy feel to the songs than on Burke's earlier Atlantic recordings.

Burke's delivery of the title track is magnificent. So good, in fact, that the single charted on both US black (#15) and pop (#45) charts. This was no mean feat as Creedence Clearwater Revival's original was still charting at the time.

The rest of the album is uniformly good, although a notch less stellar than the leadoff track. This may be because the selection of the cover material is a little bit too safe for its own good. Although Burke always remains his own man, it is not easy to reinvent already known, very good songs at will. Of course, the same comment can be applied to many soul albums from this era.

Aside from "Proud Mary", my favourite tracks are Hawkins-Oldham's "I Can't Stop (No, No, No)" and Johnson-Oldham-Penn's "Uptight Good Woman". I also very much like the cover of Marvin Gaye's hit "I'll Be Doggone and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine."

Unfortunately, "Proud Mary" was to be Solomon Burke's last hit single of note as his style of music was superseded, in the seventies, by Funk, Philly Soul and, ultimately, Disco.

It is worth mentioning that the contents of this album, with the addition of SEVEN single sides and outtakes, were already remastered and released on the Sundazed label in 2000 under the title: "Proud Mary: the Bell Sessions". This "expanded" version is still available from Amazon's website.
