Music : Time and Time Again

Paul Motian is one of the greatest jazz drummers, but he is also a great leader and composer as well. Motian was the drummer in Bill Evans' most celebrated trio (with Scott LaFaro on bass) and in Keith Jarrett's US quartet. In my opinion he has built up a body of work as a leader as good as the work of either of those great groups.
This trio, with Bill Frisell on guitar and Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone, has released several excellent albums, most recently 2005's 'I Have the Room Above Her'. With 'Time and Time Again' they adopt a similarly light, subtle style, but take it further. The rhythm here is barely stated at all, giving the music a floating quality, and allowing Motian to use his drums very imaginatively. Frisell's guitar creates a wonderful range of sounds and Lovano usually takes the lead in stating melody. All but two of the tracks are Motian compositions: 'This Nearly Was Mine' is an excellent reworking of a Richard Rodgers tune and 'Light Blue' is by Thelonious Monk, continuing Motian's (and this trio's) role as one of the greatest interpreters of Monk's music (see 'Monk in Motian' in particular).
This is quiet music that has little in common with a lot of jazz, but it will certainly appeal to many jazz fans. Fans of Motian will love it but it is also a good place to start if you are new to the work of this wonderful trio.
