This is the song that introduced me to Nine Inch Nails, a band i am eternally glad i discovered. With that pulsating distorted bassline and Trent's creepy lyrics comenting on the modern obsession with reality TV and such like, this is a pure anthem and one that is hard to resist. This theme is echoed in the video that is included on this CD too with a focus on various TV screens as soldiers storm a building. It is sharp, modern, striking and fits the feel of the track perfectly.
In many ways, this is Nine Inch Nails at the most catchy, an element of them i like as like the rest of Year Zero, it presents a band that is far more accessible and thus some of their best work since the late 80s masterpiece that is Pretty hate Machine.
As Trent roars out 'I've got my violence in hi-def' in the infectious chorus you can't help but fall in love with this song. Like everything Nine Inch Nails has put out over the last 15 or so years, it is immaculately produced, a intricate blend of angsty, powerful rock with those delicate touches of electronics that help make the band unique. All in all, an awesome song.
The Tardusted remix that serves as the b-side to the single is slower and adds an urban feel to the song and if anything, only adds to the sinister power of the original. Keen remixers will also appreciate the inclusion of the instrumental of Year Zero album track 'The Greater Good', a brooding slice of beat-driven electronica.
