Another greatest hits compilation, possibly released to coicide with the 'Sweet Soul Music' tribute tour to the Stax/Atlantic acts, which I saw and enjoyed last week.
All her great Atlantic hits are here. 'Respect', 'I Say A Little Prayer' and 'Think', as well as huge American hits less known in the UK. My faves are 'Call Me' 'I Never Loved A Man' 'Until You Come Back to Me' and....well all of them really. This is the best of the best soul singer on the planet.
If you can afford it, go for the 87 track four disc box set also called 'Queen Of Soul'. It is available through Amazon at a fraction of the price I bought it for twelve years ago. I'm not complaining though, because I have got a lot of wear out of it! It's a more comprehensive collection of her years at Atlantic.
I would never disrespect another reviewer, but somebody has said that Aretha's version of 'Son Of A Preacher Man' adds little to Dusty Springfield's original. The song was written for Aretha, but she was afraid to do it as she did not want to upset her Gospel music fans, so they gave it to Dusty. Now I love Dusty's version, and that whole 'Dusty In Memphis' album, but when Aretha did it a couple of years later, even Dusty herself said she wished she had cut it that way. Aretha's phrasing, the slightly funkier arrangement, and that retard in the bridge really get you where you live if you have any real soul. O.K., end of rant.
An album of wonderful music that defines the word 'soul'.

Well, it more or less does what it says on the box. There is plenty of it, at a decent price, taking us through the best of Aretha during her years at Atlantic, universally accepted as the peak of a long and distinguished career - the earlier years tending to jazz and pop, the last twenty or so to histrionics. How many copies it will sell I don't know.There have already been a number of compilations of her best work, and the selection of some of the non hits is a little quixotic - unusually for Aretha her version of Son of a Preacher Man adds little to Dusty's original. Most of the Atlantic albums are still available, wonderful, varied, and cheap - not a bad combination. Still, quibbles aside, what could be finer? As the immortal George Jackson pleaded, 'Hey Aretha, play one for me...'
