Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Disappointed
I have to agree with the reviewer "El Burrito" here. I too have been trying to understand "what all the fuss is about". I have been searching for something catchy about this album but am struggling to find it. The first track Northern Swing is a promising number however in my opinion none of the other tracks live up to it. Generally speaking I find that if an album such as 'Turntable Soul Music' has been reviewed twelve times on Amazon, eleven of which have favorable reviews that this is usually a good indicator to whether an album is worth buying or not. However in this case I'm guessing all the favorable reviews came from mates of the band or such like....?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Invest in this
I bought this Album towards the end of last year. The amount I've played it, you'd think I should be done with it. I'm not. Instead I find myself constantly fishing it out to listen to at home, in the car, to my friends. Everytime its on in company, someone inevitably asks me who it is. Northern Girls is a great track, but I'm happy to let the CD just play, and (almost) never feel the urge to skip forward. If you like Ben Westbeech, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, Lamb, this is a definite must. Don't be put of if you have never heard them before, the album is instantly likeable -but not unintelligent.
Six months after buying unearthing this treasure, I'm still finding it difficult to to top it despite my insatiable music habit. Basically, put it at the top of your wishlist,

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tip top album
One of my favourite albums of the year. Fat funky fresh & full of fantastic music & swelling vocals. "Alice" is just a classic if ever there was. Downtempo without getting bland , can't recommend it enough.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Drab early nineties rehash
After giving this a good half a dozen listens and placing my trust in the other reviewers on this page I have to say that I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. We've been down the female vocalist, one guy on the turntables, another on the guitar road plenty times before. Turntable Soul Music is a very apt description of what Belleruche do - it's gentle, polished and unlikely to cause offense - it all adds up to a pretty tame listen.
"Northern Girls," kicks off the record with an energetic driving beat. Is it me, or can you not hear singer Katrin DeBoer's voice if you turn this up loud? It seems lost somewhere in the mix. I find the singing on this frail and pretty unremarkable, lacking the astonishing purity of a Skye Edwards, or the battered, haunting quality of Beth Gibbins. It's a play it safe voice - lacking in subtlety or raw emotional power.
The tracks on this that really stand out are, "Minor Swing," with its infectious bouncing trombone driven rhythm - very good, awoke me from my slumber - and the gentle, wispy laments of,"Reflection,"and,"13:6:35."
The rest is a largely drab set of passable tunes, a style rehashed from the early nineties for those who missed the boat the first time round.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Breathing new(ish) life into t**p-h*p
If you took Portishead, Mr. Scruff, Roisin Murphy, the Cinematic Orchestra and maybe a quarter each of Sia, Helicopter Girl and Erykah Badu, chopped them into little bits, put the bits into a bag and pulled them out one by one until you had enough to make a new band with, one of the possible random combinations would be Belleruche. Which is no bad thing, because if their music isn't exactly groundbreaking it certainly is well-crafted, engaging, intelligent and listenable. Not every track is quite as memorable as it should be but every debut is allowed its flaws and these don't stand in the way of some excellent and characterful music. At their best Belleruche ably stand comparison with any of the artists listed above and I'll be keenly watching to see what they do next.
