Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Time
Undoubtedly one of Traditional Country music's finest artists - perhaps only second to the great George Strait - Alan Jackson continues his illustrious, almost two-decade long career with this, his first ever full-album of self-penned songs. Although clocking in at over 70 minutes, it's still a bountiful listening experience, in turns reflective ("I Wish I Could Back Up", "Listen to Your Senses", "1976", "Right Where I Want You", the number 1 "Small Town Southern Man" and "Sissy's Song", an ode to a recently deceased family friend) and humourous ("I Still Like Bologne", "Laid Back and Low Key", the chart-topping "Good Time" and my personal favourite, "Country Boy").

Although calculating the obvious risk of not employing the standard Nashville tunesmiths, it is, perhaps purposefully, a very personal albums. Perhaps almost too much so, in "Nothing Left to Do", one of only a couple of tracks which fails to deliver.

A few pleasant surprises are in store, however, not least in the sparkling duet with one of the most popular female country singers of the last fifteen years, Martina McBride, on "Never Loved Before" and on the excellent "Long Long Way", every instrument has a chance to shine when the mandolin, guitar, banjo, fiddle and drums get to have it's own respective solo.

This album will probably become the yardstick to which all subsequent albums will be measured. Old fans will love it, and new ones - of any genre - will doubtless enjoy spending time with a master craftsman at the very peak of his powers. And yes, I did have a good time!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - ABSOLUTELY GREAT
Have just got a copy of this album having spent the last two weeks driving around south western US and hearing Small Town Southern Man every time we tuned the radio to a country station. I hadn't realised that Alan Jackson still sounded like this....such wonderfully uncomplicated music and so solid across the whole selection. Ditto to all the other reviews here....I'd be worried if I thought there were peole out there who don't like this album!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - fantastic stuff!!
another brilliant album from Alan, can't fault it at all! His music just gets better. fantastic stuff Alan, keep them coming.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Alan Jackson back on top form
This is not an album to skip tracks. Start at number one and let it play through to number seventeen. This has got to be voted album of the year at the CMA awards in November. The rock and pop that has infiltrated country music over the last couple of decades will always be playing second fiddle while this man is alive. Not just Alan Jackson at his best, but country music at it's best, and all written by the maestro himself.
Don't think twice about buying this album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Woo, That Was Good" - Too Right, Alan!!
The old Alan Jackson is back!! After two untypical albums - a gospel collection and a more laid back, less honky-tonk affair - Jackson returns to familiar territory with a superb collection of new country songs!

When I hear music of this quality, I feel somewhat sorry for people who say, "I don't like country music". They don't know what they're missing! From the opening title track "Good Time" (to my mind his best song for years), right through to the closing "If Jesus Walked the World Today", there's barely a dud moment, but lots of highlights! After the great opener, "Long Long Way" is probably my favourite, with a marvellous closing section where AJ introduces each of the instruments - fantastic, or "Woo, That Was Good" as he says himself at the end! The duet with Martina McBride, "Never Loved Before", is a pleasure too. When I saw that a duet was included I assumed it would be one of those big ballad affairs, but no, it's a mid-paced rocker with some great harmonica (sounding very much like Stevie Wonder!).

As with all of AJ's albums, the playing throughout is first class, with the fiddle and steel guitar on "Right Where I Want You" and the acoustic guitar on "Sissy's Song" being worthy of special mention.

Of course, being over 71 minutes long, quality slips sometimes. "When the Love Factor Slips" is an OK song but just doesn't feel up to the quality of the other tracks. And as for "Nothing Left To Do" - surely I can't be the only person who will cringe at Alan Jackson singing about his sex life!!

Welcome back Alan! A fantastic country collection, and an easy contender for `Album of the Year'!
