Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Foot down..at last!
I was lucky enough to see 9 of the 11 songs on the album performed live at the Royal Albert Hall. As you would expect on a record that's only 35 minutes long, the tracks have an immediacy that REM haven't gone for in a good while. The songs are are songs that you either get or you don't pretty quickly - unlike Up and Reveal, which were albums that improved after several listens. Living Well's the Best Revenge is the best REM track for a long time, especially if like me you love Life's Rich Pageant and it sets the tone for what for me is the record I'd hoped for in 2001 and 2004. Many reviews have called this a return to form - unfair as apart from the dreadful Around the Sun, REM have never made a dud record. Finally, don't take any notice of reviews that try to be arty and clever in themselves and only give this album 2 stars!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - R.E.M- Accelerate review,
R.E.M. have returned after a four year hiatus, and for the first time in about a decade, Accelerate has been praised in every review of the album that I have read.

the reason for this praise is because R.E.M have decided to go back to their roots and released and out and out rock record, and its brilliant. it's a short sharp shock, clocking in a 35 minuets.

and that's what makes this such a great record, is because the resisted the temptation of making longer, which would have diluted the impact of this record. this record will restore the faith of the old skool R.E.M fans and should win over fans who were not around while rem were at their best.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - REM are back - and this time its FUN!
Its not that REM have given us bad albums for the last decade or so. They just lost their swagger. But now they are back, and this time its FUN!

Well, being REM it's more complicated than that, but again and again this album is the sound of a band enjoying what they do. And enjoying doing it short, sharp and to the point. After the meandering landscapes of New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up, Reveal and Around the Sun they knock out 11 songs in 35 minutes without pausing for breath.

People who are playing the `which REM album does this sound like' game are barking up the wrong tree. This one carves out its own territory - no problem.

First two tracks Living Well Is The Best Revenge and Man Sized Wreath sound like Bob Dylan with an afterburner, as Michael Stipe surveys his targets with scorching distain. Musically the Third track is a classic feel good REM number words wise its a gallows humour look at tennage embarisment - is this Stipe looking at himself in the mirror and laughing along? Supernatural Superserious indeed!

Is Accelerate REM playing hip New York Alt rock at its own game? Maybe. It is an effective slab of dense rock that has its deep south undercarriage intact.

When they do let the pace drop we get to hear how great their melodies and harmonies still are. They can still turn out beautiful songs.

31 minutes in leaves just four left for last tracks Horse To Water and I'm Gonna DJ. The band play like they need to beat the clock: with garage band intensity. This just makes them sound better.

I'm Gonna DJ is meant to be a response to some protest or other - whatever - what you really want to know is that it's a blast -

"If death is pretty final, I'm collecting vinyl
I'm gonna DJ at the end of the world

Cos if heaven does exist with a kickin' play list
I don't want to miss it at the end of the world."

There will be other REM albums to put the world to rights with - the band show no sign of stopping - for now I'm glad they let their hair down and ROCKED!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - REM Accelerate into the 21st century
They may have lost the dots from their name, but REM show here in this brisk 34 minute romp, they haven't lost their rocking soul. Living Well sounds just like a sequel to 1986's Just a Touch, and it would appear in the bands eyes that nothing much has changed since then. The title track twists, turns and kicks you like no other REM song has done this decade, and the closing salvo of Horse to water and DJ are as strong as any on previous REM works.

REM are still alive
REM are still kicking
REM are still relevant
REM are still rocking!
