- A good move
This is like a cross between Send and 154, lacking the angryness of Send and the wetter bits of 154. They must be knocking on a bit now but they sound fresh and dynamic. I think i will play it a lot.

- Wire - Bruce Gilbert = WIR
When I first heard Read & Burn 03, I thought, here's something that is significantly different from the previous album, Send, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why other than to say, I thought the guitar portion was weak. I recall reading that guitarist, Bruce Gilbert, left the band a few years ago, but without a listing of band members, on said EP, it slipped.
Along comes Object 47 with the listing of the new Wire and indeed, no Bruce Gilbert. Is this a terrible thing? No, not really. Wire had an incarnation as WIR (dropping the E) to indicate that Robert Grey was not present on The First Letter, and that was an excellent album... certainly one of the best from the late 80s and early 90s line-up. Perhaps the band should have renamed itself it again to indicate this is not the full original band.
Object 47 is more like collaboration between Colin Newman and Graham Lewis than it is a true Wire album. After all, without Bruce Gilbert's distinctive guitar work, is it really Wire? But this is an excellent album all the same; it's just that it takes some time getting used to (as did previous collaborations between Lewis and Gilbert did under the band name, Dome). As a previous reviewer stated, it might come off as 'boring' at first, but stick with it. Newman and Lewis are quite talented and have pulled off quite a miracle considering the loss of their lead guitarist.
I gave it 4-stars (because it is hard to put this on level of Send, Pink Flag, Missing Chairs and 154). Had I reviewed it when I first heard it, it would have been 3. Who knows? After another month and after becoming more accustomed to it, it may rate higher still. In the end, anything from Newman and/or Lewis is better than 90% of everything else out there.

For those that have journeyed with Wire for 30 years this is a return to their late 70s/early 80s vibe. Wire can be challenging, but this album combines hard core music with lightness and rhythm. Some stand out tracks but some average too. Best see Wire live and it'll all make sense.
A worthy addition to the Wire repetoire.

I've listened to this album a fair few times now and I absolutely love it. I'll admit I was unsure what to expect. I gave Read and Burn 3 five stars and I was hoping this would be as good, but to my amazement, it's actually better.
It isn't a record that grabs you from the start, although I'll admit I certainly liked it on the first run through, but now it's getting worn out through repeated playing. So persevere.
What does it sound like? Er, Wire!
They're one of the few bands who don't sound like anyone else (The Fall and British Sea Power being other examples with their own unique sound), and it always amazes me, when you still get Cliff, Status Quo and Mr Jagger churning out the same old stodge (which people still buy), that other "older gentlemen" like Messrs Newman and co can still sound absolutely contemporary (or in fact one step ahead).
And at least if you don't like it, it only lasts for 35 minutes....

I absolutely hated this when I first heard it. Really, the other recent output from wasn't anything to get overly excited about, but Object 47 just bored the crap out of me on first listen, but after a few listens I warmed to it somewhat.
Opener, "One of Us," stands as one of the better tracks on the album, but that is saying very little about the track itself. Catchy, and with a somewhat danceable beat, but lacking any real momentum or drive.
None of the rest of the album is drastically different. One especially regular aspect is the mild distortion on the guitars. I'm not a fuzz hater at all (hey, I love Isn't Anything), but this effect gets slightly irritating after a few tracks.
Again, the material isn't BAD at all; just rather boring when you inevitably compare them to those of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154. If you want to get into Wire, buy one of the albums I just mentioned. If you've just bought the album and are wondering what the hell the hype surrounding Wire is (was) about, get one of the albums I just mentioned.
