Two stories are truly gruesome and VERY violent. Not prince overthrowing dragon in woods to save princess, gruesome and violent. I mean creeping envy, revenge and sadistic murder of an elderly lady and a young boy (amongst other things)!

DEFINITELY NOT for all children by any means. Just had to add this review so more critical (discerning?) parents could be warned if needed.

The remaining stories are great. However, The Little Match Girl is very, very sad! But, so true to how some children today must struggle while those with far more than they need walk by. A deeply poignant tale.

Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales

This is a good, sturdy hardback edition, suitable, in my view, mainly for adult readers. The font is tiny, closely spaced, and could intimidate younger readers. The paper is rough and of poor quality; the illustrations are very -- very -- few and far between, black and white, small, and in my opinion, not particularly good. There are also a few punctuation errors, which, while they don't distort the meaning overly, are nonetheless annoying.
Nevertheless, it's good to have Anderson's tales in one durable volume, faithfully translated.

All the famous tales are here along with the not so famous (and not so good) eg The Dung Beetle. Anderson's tales have always struck me as more for adults than for children (just look at the disney-fication of A Little Mermaid) and there is a certain darkness that permeates this collection.
Important for its fame and a pleasure in its simplicity. It's a shame some of the stories don't add up to much but an excellent read anyway.

This is a wonderful book and I hope adults won't be put off giving this book to their children because of the storyline. I think adults sometimes do not give children enough credit, it is the one book from my childhood which really stands out in mind, and I had it from a very early age about six. Young children propably won't really process the more so called "violent" parts of the book and instead will be captivated by the illustrations, it is the kind of book that as you get older you appreciate more. I found the story itself and especially the illustrations fascinating and it really stimutaled my imagination (especially the inside cover with all the fairy tale characters set against the Beanstalk), when mentioned it is the one ladybird book which ...
