I'm not commenting on the film's quality. (I strongly suspect that everybody reading these reviews already holds Temple to be both adorable and a great actor.) What I would like to point out is that DVD capacity is totally wasted in this product. It should not be described as "main language English", but as "ONLY language English". There are no other dialogue tracks, and it lacks all subtitling, even in English. So forget about any other bells and whistles.
Perhaps I was spoiled by previous DVD purchases, which all included them. Perhaps nobody else would imagine that they would be included, at this price. But, since I would have appreciated being forewarned, here goes my warning to others!

This is the film that made Sherlock Holmes a passion in the Forties, that ruined Basil Rathbone's career and that probably made people more than usually cautious around large dogs. The tale is one of Conan Doyle's best constructed stories about The Great Detective. The movie does the story justice. It features performances, for good and bad, that set the images of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in people's minds for half a century. The atmosphere of the book, the foggy moor (in Dartmoor), the soggy mire (the Grimpen Mire), the great damp mansion on the edge of the mire, the sins of debauched ancestors coming home to destroy a young heir, a giant beast which glows through the fog as it slavers and runs toward you, and a ruthless murderer determined ... The Public Enemy is dated, a little corny, with dialogue that now seems full of cliches...one of those movies that some who disdain "old" movies might point to as how over-rated "old" movies can be. But I challenge anyone who has the least appreciation for solid direction and great acting to watch this movie and not quickly get beyond all that and become immersed in the film. William Wellman, one of the great American directors, has constructed a movie that just keeps moving, with startling set pieces, wonderful photography and a visual narrative that matches the story. James Cagney, in the role that made him a major star, completely dominates the screen. He gives a performance of magnetic ruthlessness, casual yet precise physicality, and just plain contemptuous ... The print of this film isnt fantastic but as its a cheap dvd and the only version currently available I cant really complain, its nice just to be able to see this film at long last. I always wanted to see it because of the fabulous COLIN CLIVE who was a fabulous actor but sadly very little of his work is available for us fans to see outside of the first 2 Universal FRANKENSTEIN movies. Im pleased to say though, hes just as good in this...very watchable...though the film is rather short (just over an hour) and naturally concentrates mostly on the JANE EYRE character..played by VIRGINA BRUCE. Cant say I was very impressed with her performance, instantly forgettable, and as for that obnoxious child she is tutoring, in once scene the little annoyance falls into a large vase, Im sure Im not the ... This set is a wonderful edition to your library! All of these classic films are remastered and in almost pristine condition. They are packaged beautifully and include several miniaturized movie posters.
If you haven't seen these films before and grew up on the Jeremy Brett episodes, they still are interesting to watch. Unlike the Granada series, only two of these films are actually based on Doyle stories. The other films are WWII stories with the Greatest Detective breaking up Nazi spyrings and mobilizing the citizens of England during their greatest fight (well, greatest fight next to the current one going on against Muslim terrorists who are now a fifth column in the UK-- but that's another matter entirely-- maybe we need to see some new Holmes films breaking up terror cells. ...
