Seldom does a definitive example of a genre come along, but this is it. Together with Costner's "Dances With Wolves" this film has to be the Western Genre's moment of triumph, certainly from outside the genre's golden age in the 1950s. Yet it was for Unforgiven that Eastwood won his Best Director's Oscar. I'm not saying he shouldn't have won for that, he just should have won for this too.
It is a film with manages to merge triumphalsim with en edgy darkness, at times it's uplifting and humbling, it is superbly acted with some magnificent characters and performances from lead and support actors alike. The film challenges many pre-conceptions we might have about this period in American History as the white man's enemy is himself whilst ... Read More:

All I have got to say is that John Wayne redeems himself in this, his final movie. I got so disillusioned with him in True Grit, Rooster Cockburn and Brannigan that I had to make a hard decision about whether I should watch this film at all. I made the right decision. I consider myself an aficianado of the genre, and this Western was a Western to end all Westerns. John Wayne knew it and he put every last drop of his being into it. Sadly, very few notable Westerns were made subsequent to this apart from Tom Horn.

I have to agree with one of the reviewers on here. The film is a fantastic buddy movie, and one of my favourite Clint films. But the film transfer is a 4.3 letterbox version and a complete waste of money for a great movie.
The info for the film didn't say whether it was a widescreen or not, so it was a surprise to see it's 4.3 letterbox.A great shame.

I wasn't expecting much of this film, but in my opinion I thought it was really well-put together. There is excellent scenery and a decent plot about four friends who go camping along the river, and get attacked along the way. Enjoyable to watch and a superb ending. I would buy this film as you grow to like it and it doesn't get tedious. This is a film with twists and sometimes has suspense. It surprised me, I really took a liking to this film. A thriller to be enjoyed.

As far as Special Forces films go Navy Seals isnt bad, but as most SP films go due to lack of intelligence and the governments denile of SPs exsistence Film companys are never going to get it right, People take films alittle to serious at times, if films were dictated as they would happen for real most films would be boring, For action Navy Seals is good, Actings not great but i think thats more to do with the dialouge more than the actors themselves, Plot not exactly original but plays out okay, overall if you like military films its great, if not then... well you can guess, me i think its good and has earn't a place in my collection

Although the next two Rambo movies get progressively sillier, this is a good movie that has a surprisingly moving finale.
Apart from the bull headed attitudes of the local cops, we see a veteran who is a genuine guy. And we see him hurting. The final scenes, after tremendous destruction and skills with violence, are thought provoking and emotional.
A surprisingly thoughtful movie.

In the 1970s films became more violent. No doubt about it. And The Gauntlet is unquestionably a violent film. Buildings are reduced to rubble, vehicles are shot to pieces, people are pumped full of lead, and plenty of blood is spilled.... all in the name of entertainment! This noisy Clint Eastwood vehicle is good fun, with lots of exciting sequences, though thoroughly unbelievable pretty much from the start.
Honest, hard-working Phoenix cop Ben Shockley (Eastwood) is sent by Comissioner Blakelock (William Prince) to bring in a prostitute who may be able to provide key testimony in a high profile trial. But from the moment Shockley meets Gus Malley (Sondra Locke), he suddenly finds himself in the firing line.... and it's not the usual bad guys who are after him, but the cops. Seems ... Read More:
