Despite the reviews here giving this DVD 5 stars, it is indeed a classic, avoid it a all costs. Luckily I only rented it - the picture quality is simply abyssmal, straight from a VHS tape I reckon and umpteenth generation to boot. STEER CLEAR!

Ah,they don't make films like this anymore - or, at least, not for grown -ups.Nominally based on a Damon Runyon story, Hope is at his wily,cowardly,best as he tries to repay a mobster money he has lost on a horse.To do this he enlists his friends,shady characters to a man but nevertheless with hearts of gold, to dress up as Santas and collect money for a bogus home for old ladies in the run up to Christmas.The film's packed with great character actors, smart dialogue,lots of laughs,some good songs,including Silver Bells sung by Hope and Marilyn Maxwell,and,of course,everything turns out all right in the end.If only gangsters were really this soft hearted.

I have just obtained this box set and what a handsome addition to my collection it is! Produced by film historian Ken Barnes, the set is nicely presented in innovative packaging for the four DVDs at a very reasonable price. The films are given the distinctive Ken Barnes touch with moving menus (i.e. instead of stills illustrating the scene in question, there are moving pictures and sound instead), extensive production notes and comments on the main players by Ken himself. Excellent copies of the films are buttressed by the original theatre trailers, a photo gallery section for each film, the rare short "Hollywood Victory Caravan" (Bing sings "We've Got Another Bond To Buy") plus a glimpse of Mr. Crosby at the Stage Door Canteen in 1944. If you like westrns an you have a funnybone this is for you. Hope is out of fashion now because of his right wing leanings later in life but see him at his youthful best here. His one liners are brilliantly delivered and his comedic talent undeniable. My kids (9 and 11) loved it!

A sequel if you like to"the cat and the canary"Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard reunite for more haunted house thrills and laughs.Not quite as good,but not far behind.Picture quality good on the whole(far superior to "the cat and the canary",which was awful.Orbit Media responsible for both,by the way)and a small part of the film has been cut(inside the castle)But worth buying anyway!!!
