I watched American Gangster for the first time on Sky the other day and have to say it is a great film and a pleasure to watch. I've just ordered the blu ray.

It's a slow burner and not the most action packed, but that isn't always a bad thing as this film proves. Based on the true story of Frank Lucas and his rise to power and Richie Roberts and his relentless quest to bring Lucas to justice.

The acting is great as you would expect from such a cast and New York and New Jersey look great going back to the 70's.

There is some great books and documentaries on Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes (this guy should have film about his life also) so check them out.

All in all a 5 star film.

This review is from the DVD so the real difference there are no extras Ben Stiller is thrown in at the deep end when he get a job as a nightwatch man at the museum were all the exibits come to life even the dinosaur bones.

Ben Stiller is great in this film it is very funny and the speical effects are great but mostly done by computer.

Many famous faces appear one most people will know for Mary Poppins but he is far older now.(Dick Van Dyke) If you like Ben Stiller you may enjoy this film but even if you're not nyou nmay enjoy it.

This ganster movie from the great (or at least he used to be) Ridley Scott is a star-driven, big-budget prestige picture that's inordinately dull. American Gangster begins with a witty scene and ends with a punchy series of title cards, but the long middle of this 160-minute movie fails to engage as it plods through procedure and fails to develop characters.


Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Crowe), depicted as one of the last honest cops in a time of widespread police corruption, gets picked to lead the Narcotics Squad tracking down Denzel Washington (Lucas).

Larry needs a job to prove to his son that he is not justall hot-air.So he gets at job at the large Natural History Museum. Sounds a pretty tame job? Yes, maybe but not if your the night guard. Alone in the mueseum where things come alive at night.
The beginning of the film is slow and I almost wanted to ask," Shall we stop watching this?" But it soon livens up. Its a reasonable film, with a few gags and edge-of-your-seat kind of stuff.
One little Point: One thing that grated on me was the usual stereotyping of dad being dumb and mum having everything together.

This movie is full of action, adventure and creative characters without being violent and scary. My two boys loved it. It was loads of fun for my husband and I as well as there is plenty of comedy that transends generations. We have seen Spy Kids 2 as well but can't reccomend it as it contains more violence and the characters were pretty scary.

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) a dreamer, an entrepreneur and an inventor is in-between income opportunities again. This would o.k. except ex-etux (Kim Raver) is under the impression that he is a drifter and a negative influence on their son. Realizing she may be right it is off to serfdom. After a frantic one day search he lands a position as a night guard at the museum. He is handed instructions and told not to let anything in "or out."

Getting to the point takes some time in this movie but it is necessary as we are watching a balance between a serious parent child exchange and an almost, o.k. a slapstick quasi animated movie. This film is great - its funny and everything. I think that it doesnt match up to the first one but the acting is excellent, the setting is really cool, and of course the gadgets are too. If you are debating on buying this then go for it, but expect a little bit of bad acting - especially with the little girl - Gerty. There are huge monsters and Carmen is begginning to grow up and have crushes, its all very good. This film is excellent, but not quite as excellent as the first.

Far better than this meagre release would indicate. Solid performances from everyone, a clever story with a few twists and it's nice to see an unashamedly feel good movie that manages to end without ladling on the syrup factor.

It has been shown on UK TV by Channel 4 in widescreen, so why the R1 1.33 only vanilla release?

We demand a decent DVD release. I'd replace mine like a shot for a good widescreen transfer with a few insights from cast and crew into the making. Some of the scenes out in the countryside on their car journey just scream out for the open vista of widescreen.

The One [2002]

Martial arts sci-fi thriller in which Jet Li plays a villain called Yu Law murdering versions of himself in parallel worlds so that he can become `the one', a being of unlimited power. But he has met his match in the version of himself known as Gabriel Law. This film is not bad and Jet Li does a decent job playing good and evil versions of himself. The special effects and fight scenes stand out and are really what make the film. Brit actor Jason Statham also does a passable job as a `multiverse agent' out to apprehend the evil Yu Law and bring him to justice. But although enjoyable this film does not reach the heights necessary to be considered excellent. Still, good enough sci-fi fare.
