The Official Story [1985]

starring: Hector Alterio, Norma Aleandro, Chunchuna Villafane, Hugo Arana, Guillermo Battaglia
directed by: Luis Puenzo

Release Date April 11, 2005
I first saw this film when my own little girl was about the same age as the child in the film. It turned me inside out! The lead actress Norma Aleandro gives one of the finest performances I have ever seen. Hector Alterio as her husband plays the part of the irritated and increasingly panic struck husband brilliantly too. Incidently, the two came together again in 2001 to play a devoted husband and wife with Alzheimer's in 'Son of the Bride'. Unsurprisingly, they steal the show.

Private Lives / Vidas Privadas

starring: Cecilia Roth, Gael García Bernal, Luis Ziembrowsky, Chunchuna Villafañe, Lito Cruz
directed by: Fito Páez

Release Date August 28, 2002
'Vidas privadas', by first-time director Fito Paez, is the most pretentious and boring movie I've ever seen. The movie suffers from an unconvincing plot and pseudo-intellectual banter that result in a very forced and ridiculous ending. The sex and the final revelation are only there for shock value, and nothing else. The acting is really good, but I don't think it has anything to do with Paez's direction; he just hired some really good actors. Gael García Bernal's fake Argentinean accent is alright, but he still gives a good performance. Cecilia Roth is always great, and the movie is not a complete fiasco only because of her performance.

This movie tries, very unsuccessfully, to be tragic. It's the story of an Argentinean woman who ... Read More:
