I am not crazy about musicals in general, but I liked "Moulin Rouge" very much, and I love "Hair" and a few others, so I am not opposed to the genre either.

"Mamma Mia!" was much better than I expected, and I enjoyed the cast very much, especially the 3 male actors. Whoever picked them.. well done!! Meryl Streep sings nicely, as always, however I liked her voice much more in "A Prairie Home Companion".

All in all, the movie is cute, entertaining, but nothing to leave any lasting mark.

I am what you might call a Mamma Mia addict - I saw it five times at the cinema, and am just about to start watching the DVD for the second time since it arrived on Monday. There is a very good reason for it....the film is fantastic! So funny and light-hearted, and even though some of the singing is quite ropey, this only adds to the film's charm. Meryl Streep's rendition of "The Winner Takes It All" is incredible. If you never buy another DVD again, buy this one! (And the gift set with diary, pen and "surprise" is good too!)

I saw, and enjoyed, this mindless nonsense in the cinema and decided to get a copy for when I needed cheering up - Pierce Brosnan's first notes never raise less then a laugh.

I have now had, and returned, two copies of the disc to another retailer because it just won't play! On my SONY BDP-S300 (which plays every other Blu Ray I have) the disc boots up to the movie menu, which takes between 3 & 4 minutes, and then, no matter which option you select, turns the machine off. It then restarts and goes into the 'load' process again, the only thing that stops it is to jump up and press the draw open/close button. Anyone else experienced this phenomenon and know of a fix please, or does my machine just have better taste than I have?

Pride And Prejudice : Complete BBC Series - 10th Anniversary Edition [1995]

It's an all time classic. I believe this is the only version of Pride and Prejudice that does the book justice. Jane Austen would be very proud. I love the strength that Lizzy shows. She always holds her own and is not afraid to speak her mind. She is highly intelligent and is a good example. Colin Firth plays his part so brilliantly. The complex relationship between these two is wonderful. The battle of wills. Then to watch it all come toghether in the end always brings a tear to my eye. I have not seen a movie yet that beats this. They don't make them like this anymore.

Although it doesn't quite work, it's definitely worth watching. Some great performances. Could have cut a few of the stories out completely though. Should have focused on Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. The rest weren't really worth it although the Laura Linney storyline was moving. I cried a little and laughed a little, and I guess it kept me more engaged than most films I see.
Actually, the absolute best thing about this film is Lynden David Hall singing at the wedding at the beginning. He died a couple of years ago and it was a shock - but a beautiful one - to see him in the film, I had no idea! Beautiful man with a beautiful voice. RIP.

Unfortunately, this is miles away from being as good as the books or the first film. They changed the plot so they could shoe-horn Hugh Grant into the film (and a not very good fight scene with Colin Firth as well). But so much worse is the sense that Bridget has been made into a figure of fun, rather than someone who was funny because we related to her. Not funny, not romantic, even Colin Firth is less lovely in this film.

WoW, what a thoroughly awfull film. Historically inaccurate, badly acted, terrible script and a very cheap rip of of the clive owen "king arthur" movie.

I would quite happily give away my copy to anyone sad enough to want it.

If you are looking for something that can equal kingdom of heaven, gladiator, braveheart or king arthur, keep looking, this is certainly not the movie you're looking for.

In Sachen "Period Drama" würde ich mich als beherzte geldausgebefreudige Anfängerin bezeichnen und wühle mich mutig durch das überbordende Angebot. Die englisch-sprachige aus UK importierte "Jane Austen Collection" erschien mir für den Einstieg als angemessen. Nach Wives and Daughters (1999), als dt. Ausgabe und Cranford (2007) [UK IMPORT] beides nach Elisabeth Gaskells Romanvorlagen wurde es endlich Zeit sich der KÖNIGSKLASSE dieses Genre, nämlich der JANE AUSTEN - Adaptionen zu widmen. Mit meinem Englisch steht es grundsätzlich nicht schlecht, sodass ich keine Bedenken in Hinsicht nicht vorhandener deutscher Tonspur oder gar Untertiteln hatte. Immerhin warten alle genannten ...
