I found the beginning of the film confusing: so many characters were rapidly introduced. I suppose the shaky camera-work (like a home movie) was deliberate. The sub-titles were quite difficult to read. After about 30 minutes I gave up as nothing much had happened and the characters hadn't been developed sufficiently for me to care what happened to them. I gather that it was going to be about a young man's quest for the truth about his father, but I feel if a film hasn't captured my interest after 30 mins or so it hasn't succeeded. I might have continued if I hadn't had anything better to watch, but I had.

I wanted to like this movie. I also wanted to like Daniel Burman's other films, but so far have been unable. Whilst Lost Embrace attempted to provide an insight into the ordinary lives of members of the Jewish community in Once, this movie wavered between the annoyingly absurd and darn right cheesy (think of Santamaria lifting the baby out of the bin?). The story in itself had the potential to be both insightful and interesting. An interesting ethnic group in an interesting city, the conflicting emotional feelings the protagonist has for his Jewish girlfriend and feisty christian co-worker. The fact is, that Hendler's character is so one dimensional that you never get any sense of how he feels about either girl or anything in particular. Hendler ... Read More:

I was born in Uruguay and lived there until I was 26. Maybe that is why I enjoyed this movie so much. The script deals with the things that usually happens to teenagers that are growing into adulthood (the movie is not about guys in their 20s as the editorial review says!).
I particularly liked the way the movie is filmed, the style is unique and keeps the audience interested by simply showing normal events develop. If you are familiar with Montevideo, then your enjoyment of the movie will surely increase, since you will be visiting known places all over again.
If you are a film enthusiast you must see this movie and be amazed by how much can be achieved with such a low budget!

Set in a small, run down shopping centre in downtown modern day Buenos Aires, Lost Embrace is a wry, observational comedy that follows the life of Ariel (Daniel Hendler), a young man who is determined to secure a European passport and leave Argentina for Europe. At least, this is what you are meant to think for much of the beginning of the film. In fact, it emerges that Ariel's mother,Sonia (Adriana Aizemberg)has never been completely straight with him about why his father never returned from fighting in Israel. When Ariel's father returns to Buenos Aires for a long overdue first encounter with his young adult son, he brings with him a new story, new truths and a hitherto lost embrace.
I really enjoyed the film. It is very cleverly written, on the one hand ... Read More:
